SONG GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE

Bae Is Victorious

CLIFTON, VA-The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) made the trip up north this weekend to the Fred Couples designed Westfields Golf Club in Clifton, VA. Conditions varied significantly from Saturday to Sunday this past weekend.  Saturday saw wind gusts near 30 mph and brisk temperatures while Sunday had light winds and sunny skies.  The players took advantage of the second round’s conditions on Sunday and fired some impressive low rounds.  Many local players brought some galleries with them creating a fun and competitive environment for a great weekend of golf.

In the Boys 15-19 Division Chris Song of Centerville, VA had two solid rounds during the weekend to claim the title.  On the windswept course during the first round Song safely shot a 77, enough for a two shot lead. Sunday’s calmer weather allowed Song to fire a final round 73, enough for a two day total of eight-over par (150).  In second place was Noori Hyun of Centerville, VA. Hyun paced himself with a first round 81 and improved by 10 shots during the second round for a sizzling 71.  Hyun took home the Dru Belts Low Final Round Belt buckle with the impressive even par round.  Rounding out the top three was Luke Malanchuk of Arlington, VA.  Malanchuk played consistent all weekend with two rounds of 79-76 for a two day total of 155, 13-over par.

“My putting helped me out on these tricky greens.  The combination of speed and undulation changes led to some very difficult conditions throughout the weekend ” said Song.  Hopefully we will be seeing more of Song this season and at the Tournament of Champions in Orlando over Memorial Day weekend.

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Luke Miller of Venetia, PA won for the third time this season.  Miller played consistent throughout the weekend with a 79-75 for a two day total of 154, 12-over par.  Miller’s two day total of 154 was enough for a six shot victory and the wire to wire victory.  Hartej Gill of Monroe Township, NJ finished in second place with two rounds of 84-76 for a total of 160.  Tying for second place honors was Bennett Buch of Sykesville, MD.  Buch had a first round 85 and played in ten less shots on Saturday for a 75, a two day total of 160.

Miller tallied up 26 pars and 1 birdie throughout the weekend. This victory just extends Miller’s already impressive IJGT resume. In thirteen starts this season Miller has nine top-10 finishes and now three wins, IJGT at Heritage Hills, IJGT Major Championship at Penn Oaks and now IJGT at Westfields Golf Club. Miller will look to continue his successful season at the IJGT Major Championship at Hershey Links.

The Girls 19 & Under Division was won by Juhee Bae of Chantilly, VA. Bae improved from the first round to the final round, notching rounds of 82-76 for a 16-over par total of 158. In second place was Alexandra Austin of Burke, VA. Austin had two consistent rounds of 82-80 for a two day total of 162. In third place was a tie between Claire Serruto of Short Hills, NJ and Paige Pomerene of Springfield, VA. Both girls came in with two day totals of 170, 28-over par.

“My ball striking really helped this week. Hitting the ball so solid in this wind really helped me keep the ball in play and where I wanted” said Bae. Bae is expecting big things this spring with her high school golf season and the IJGT Tournament of Champions in May.

The IJGT will travel to Penn Oaks Golf Club in West Chester, PA for a two day tournament on March 26 and 27.  The winners of the Boys 15-19 Division, the Girls U-19 and the winner of the Boys U-14 will be qualified for the season ending Tournament of Champions at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, FL.
