IJGT Major Championship at Port Royal - Final Round Results
Terrazas Captures Second Victory of the Season
Nakayama Champion for Fifth Time
Hilton Head Island, SC – This weekend, many of the greatest junior golfers in the world met to battle it out at the Planter’s Row course at Port Royal Plantation in the International Junior Golf Tour’s first Major Championship of the 2011-2012 season. The strong field had an international flavor, with fifteen different countries being represented. When the dust finally settled from a nerve racking final round, many familiar faces were once again raising the first place trophies.
In the Boys 15-19 Division, Aaron Terrazas of Mexico City, Mexico followed up his tremendous victory two weeks ago at Oyster Reef Golf Club with an exhilarating four-under-par performance over the weekend. Aaron was tied for the lead with Poom Pattaropong (Bangkok, Thailand) after a first round score of 71. The two competitors battled it out throughout the final round, but Aaron began to pull away with the lead en route to a three-under-par final round of 69. Poom finished the closely contested tournament in second place after rounds of 71-72 for a tournament total of 143. Rounding out the top three was Mark Folkwein (New Albany, OH) and Jordan Smith (Phoenix, AZ) after both carded solid tournament totals of 148.
Aaron displayed the solid shot making and incredible putting stroke that made him a champion just 14 days prior. No stranger to the pressures of playing in the final group, Aaron shook off a double bogey on his first hole of the final round by carding four birdies on the remaining seventeen holes with no bogeys. This poise and determination is what has propelled Aaron to a fast start in his junior golfing career. “After the stupid bogey on the first hole, I knew I had to stay focused and stick to the plan.” When asked about his plans for his upcoming events, Aaron commented “I have confidence heading into TPC Sawgrass in two weeks and am looking forward to it.”
In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Salil Ghamande of Evans, GA carried his opening round lead to his first IJGT victory. Salil shot impressive rounds of 74-77 for a weekend total of 151. Two time IJGT champion Connor Downey of Franklin, TN earned the second place trophy after he fired rounds of 80-81 for a tournament total of 161. Third place was earned by Lohith Ramaraju of London, England after he was able to card a tournament total of 163 (87-76).
Salil welcomed the tight, tree lined fairways of the Planters Course. “This is a challenging course that forces you to hit good drives. I was able to do this, but the key to my low scores was my putting.” Salil had a 6-stroke lead heading into the final round, but this did not change his strategy. “I just wanted to go out there and play my own game.”
The Girls Division showcased one of the top performers in all of junior golf thus far during the 2011-2012 IJGT season. Ayaka Nakayama, hailing from Kanagawa, Japan, was able to earn her fifth IJGT victory in six events this season. Not only is she beginning to fill her trophy case, but she was also featured in the Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd a few weeks ago for her accomplishments. Ayaka shot rounds of even-par 72 and 73 for a two day total of 145. Finishing in a close second was Ana Ruiz of Chihuahua, Mexico. Ana recorded scores of 75 and 73 for a tournament total of 148. Rounding out the top three was Ana Paula Valdes (Morelia, Mexico) after she carded solid rounds of 74-76 for a total score of 150.
Ayaka was able to use her great ball striking and short game to rise to the top of the leaderboard. After the final rounds, Ayaka commented “I feel like my course management was good this weekend. I was able to not think about the lead and focus on making good shots.”
In two weeks, the IJGT travels to TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL for a three day tournament starting on November 25th. This event is also part of the IJGT Major Series of Events. The winners of the Boys 15-19 Division, the Girls U-19 and the winner of the Boys U-14 will be qualified for the season ending Tournament of Champions at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, FL.
