Highlighted Players of the Week: Coon and Anderson

(VALLEJO, CALIF.)  Jim Coon of Orinda, Calif., and Desiree Anderson of Napa, Calif., were both victorious in their efforts at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, Calif., as they lead their respective divisions throughout on their way to being crowned West Coast Players of the Week.

Jim Coon, a former Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (HHIJGA) student, demonstrated a high level of play throughout the weekend carding rounds of 79-74 for a 9-over-par tournament total on his way to being crowned the Champion of the Boys 15-19 Division.  Playing in his first International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) event of the year, Coon was able to add an exclamation point to his victory by finishing the par-5, 18thhole with an impressive birdie.

Coon felt pressure early on in the second round as he quickly saw his lead evaporate as his competitor, Harrison Holetz of Incline Village, Nev birdie two of his first four holes.  As the final group made the turn, Coon had a slim one-stroke lead but demonstrated the poise of a Champion finishing his final nine holes strong, being only one of two players to card birdies on their back nine.  He will be back in action on April 6-7 at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

Desiree Anderson was crowned the Girls Division Champion after compiling rounds of 82-89.  Anderson stood strong in first place after the first round of play following a noteworthy back nine where she carded a strong 37 which included her only birdie of the tournament.  When asked in her post tournament interview what hole she favored on the course, she was quick to point out her success on the par-4, No. 10 hole which she credits helped catapult her to a great finish during the first round.   She later associated her championship effort to her “be happy” mentality which helped her keep a positive attitude going from hole to hole.

This was the first IJGT tournament of Desiree’s career and was all smiles as she accepted her trophy in front of her father and fellow competitors.  Desiree looks forward to competing in future IJGT events to prepare for aspirations of competing at the collegiate level.
