Hand Impressive in Victory

Zambruno Wins

Farmington, Pa. - Nemacolin Woodlands Resort - Links Course in Farmington, Pa. was host to the third Discovery Tour event. A strong field of 8 juniors, five boys and 3 girls, competed in the 9-hole event. Cool, damp, and spotty periods of rain made the course quite the challenge for these talented young golfers.

While the IJGT is devoted to juniors with a higher skill level and ambition to compete in elite fields, the Discovery Tour is a laid back, fun alternative for younger junior golfers who may have little or no tournament experience. The new tour is an excellent fit for youngsters looking to hone in on their skills while competing with juniors of the same skill level and age.

In the Boys Division, Justin Hand from Ellwood City, Pa. was awarded the Boys Division champion after shooting a round of 7-over-par 42 for the 9-hole event. Hand was able to shoot his impressive round by paring both par fives on the difficult Links Course, starting and ending his round with a par. Hand’s key to success was keeping the ball in play off the tee.

Garrett Engle of Harrisburg, Pa. took second by shooting a round of 8-over-par 43, just one stroke off the lead.  In the three Discovery Tour events thus far this season, Engle has won the inaugural event and took second at this most recent event, putting him on top of the lead for the season long merit points race. The one boy and one girl at the end of the Discovery Tour season with the most points will get one free week of summer camp at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, S.C. Tiger Hubbard of Lower Burrell, Pa. finished in third after shooting a solid round of 9-over-par 44.

In the Girls Division, local junior Abby Zambruno from Mt. Pleasant, Pa. won the division by shooting a 5-over-par 40 for the 9-hole event. Zambruno had an impressive 5 pars and got on the green in regulation numerous times, giving her an opportunity to score low.

Alice Hodge of Larchmont, N.Y. finished in second in the Division after posting a 9-over-par 44 for the tournament. Brandy Kurtz of Beaver Falls, Pa. finished in third with a 13-over-par 48. Kurtz now has taken over the lead for the Girls Division Merit Points. She also finished second at the Discovery Tour event at Greate Bay.

In two weeks, the Discovery Tour heads to Mill Creek in Churchville, N.Y. for a nine-hole event on May 5. The winner of each Discovery Tour event wins a Quagmire Golf IJGT logoed golf shirt. In each Discovery Tour event, the top-ten finishers receive merit points. At the end of the spring season, the winner of the Merit Points for the Boys and Girls will receive one free week of summer camp at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy.
