Edelman Bids Farewell with Victory at Architects
Kirk Goes Low to Secure Win
Lopatcong, N.J. – The interesting layout of Architects Golf Club played host to the International Junior Golf Tour’s (IJGT) 36-hole event on this past weekend of April 28-29, 2012. Unique and distinctive characteristics of world famous golf course architects formatted each hole and were compiled in this challenging 18-hole layout. Frigid first round weather, strong winds, and undulated greens tested the talent of some of the best junior golfers in the country.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Luke Edelman of Mahwah, N.J. fired an impressive first round score of 2-under par 69. There were many players in contention and willing to fight for the title. Edelman remained consistent shooting an even par 71 in the final round giving him a tournament total of 2-under par 140. Edelman finished the par-5’s at 3-under par for the tournament which helped earn himself the title of champion for the Jersey Championship. “I have been practicing really hard and focusing on my mental approach,” states Edelman. This win was exceptionally important to him seeing as though this is his last ever IJGT event. He will be taking his talents to play collegiate golf at Bucknell University. We wish the best of luck to Luke and know he will bring much success and charisma to Bucknell.
Finishing in a tie for second place was Matt Van Nierkerk of Rochester, N.Y., who posted a first round score of 3-over par 74 and a final round score of 1-under par 70 giving him a tournament total of 2-over par 144. Van Nierkerk stunned the audiences as he dominated the front nine of his final round making five birdies in a seven hole stretch and carding seven for the day. Also placing in a tie for second place was Kyle Wambold of Macungie, Pa., who opened with a strong 2-under par 69 followed by a final round score of 4-over par 75 capturing a tournament total of 2-over par 144. Wambold played the par-5’s at 4-under par for the tournament which gave him an edge and a Top-3 finish.

In the Boys 14 and Under Division, Walker Kirk of Lancaster, Pa., took home the championship by a lengthymargin of five strokes. Kirk opened the tournament with a solid round of 4-over par 75. After the first round Kirk had a solo second place position and knew what he had to do in the final round to be crowned a champion. Posting an even-par 71 in the final round ending in a tournament total of 4-over 146 did just that for Kirk. “After opening the entire tournament with a triple bogey, I just remained calm and fought back,” stated Kirk. He also understood the importance of consistency as he made 27 pars throughout the weekend. Finishing in second place was Gavin Rickert of Ijamsville, Md., who recorded spectacular rounds of 76-75 for a tournament total of 9-over par 151. The key for Rickert was the ability to control his mistakes, as he did not card over a bogey for the entire tournament. Rounding up the Top-3 was Rob Newhouse of New York, N.Y., Roland Massimino of Lumberville, Pa., and Nicholas Ng of New York. All three competitors carded strong rounds and had a tournament total of 155.

In the Girls Division, Gabriella Correia of Central Valley, N.Y., captured her second win at Architects of her IJGT career. Correia remained consistent throughout the weekend, even in the difficult wind and cold weather during the first round. “My driving helped a lot and my approach shots into the greens were good” stated Correia. A first round score of 9-over par 80 was followed by a final round score of 10-over par 81 giving her a tournament total of 19-over par 161 and the first place honors at the Jersey Championship. Finishing in a close second place was Alexis Hios of Rye, N.Y., who posted a tournament low first round score of 8-over par 79 which contained three birdies. Hios recorded a final round score of 83 and a tournament total of 20-over par 162. Closing out the Top-3 of the Girls Division was Jennifer Lee of Rye, N.Y. who carded rounds of 86-80 for a tournament total of 166.
The IJGT will be heading to Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville, N.Y. next week on May 5-6, 2012 for the last tournament of the Bridgestone Series events. The winners of the Boys 15-19 Division, Boys U-14 Division, and the Girls Division also qualify for the season ending Bridgestone Tournament of Champions held May 26-28, 2012 at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla.
