Ramesh Holds on for Victory at IJGT KENTWOOL Socks Junior

Ku Battles for the Girls Title

Cologne, N.J. – The International Junior Golf Tour traveled to Ron Jaworski’s Blue Heron Pines Golf Course for the 2012 KENTWOOL Socks Junior on Sept. 15-16, 2012. Title sponsor of the tournament, KENTWOOL Socks, graciously provided over ninety junior golfers with its branded “World’s Best Golf Socks” merchandise.  The juniors battled through heavy winds on Saturday, but had beautiful sunshine for the final round of play in the nationally ranked junior event.

Newtown, Pa. native Vinay Ramesh found himself sitting atop the leaderboard after fighting through the increasingly difficult course conditions on Saturday. He was able to keep his ball low and out of the wind to shoot a very impressive even par 72. Ramesh was able to set the bar, but Jimmy Davis from Cockeysville, Md. and Jacob Henny from Norwalk, Conn. lead a plethora of juniors that were right on his tail at the end of round one.

Ramesh said the course conditions were tough to fight through all weekend, but he just concentrated on shaping his shots to get himself from tee to green with as much consistency as possible.

Ramesh was able to keep himself at even par through his first nine holes on Sunday, but he had to grind out his back nine to finish with a 78 (+6) in his final round.  His 72-78- 150 was enough to edge out his fellow juniors for the Boys 15-19 title. Evan Santa from Edgewater, Md. was able to sneak in a final round 73 (+1) on Sunday to bring home a runner-up finish with a total score of 151, while Haworth, N.J. native Thomas La Morte caught up with Davis and Henny for a three-way tie for third place in the division with a total score of 152.

Anina Ku from Basking Ridge, N.J. and Sarah Kokotajlo from Ewing, N.J. lead the Girls division by a single stroke after first round play at the KENTWOOL Junior. Their final round pairing was one of the most intense battles on the course Sunday. Ku and Kokotajlo battled back and forth, trading birdies and bogeys all the way to the last few holes. Kokotajlo had a mishap on the 14th hole that opened up the door for Ku, which she took full advantage of to hold on for the victory.

“I was very consistent with my drives and approach shots all weekend,” said Ku. “I think that really helped me play well.”

Ku finished with an 82-73-155 finish to take home a seven stroke victory and her third career win on the IJGT tour. Raphaella Kang from Bayside, N.Y. came in with an 83-79-162 on the weekend to edge out Kokotajlo (82-81) by a single stroke for the runner-up finish.

John Pak from Scotch Plains, N.J. came to Ron Jaworski’s trademark course with one thing on his mind. He was looking to get his first ever IJGT tournament victory. There was nothing that was going to stand in his way with his game-plan of just coming out and hitting fairways and greens.

“My driver was my best club this weekend,” said Pak. “I hit almost every fairway today.”

Pak set the pace on Saturday by four strokes, and his Sunday was no different as he was able to stretch his lead by another stroke for a very impressive five stroke victory. Pak put up a 73-77-150 total on the weekend to capture the Boys U-14 title over Will Thompson from Pittsford, N.Y. and Brett Inserra from Upper Saddie River, N.J., who tied for the runner-up finish with tournament totals of 155.

Ku also took home the Girls Low Round honors, as she was awarded an IJGT belt courtesy of IJGT sponsor Clazic Belts for her final round 73 (+1). Tyler Sokolis from Doylestown, Pa. took home the Clazic Belt for the Boys with his final round 70 (-2).
