IJGT Labor Day Classic at Oldfield Golf Club - Final Round Results
SPIVEY WINS FIRST IJGT TITLE
Rodriguez Dominates First Event of IJGT Season
Okatie, SC — Marking the first event of the 2010-2011 International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) season, a talented group of junior golfers competed at the Labor Day event at Oldfield Golf Club for three rounds over the holiday weekend. With temperatures hovering in the low to mid-90s on all three days, the cloudless sky allowed the sun to beat down on the contestants but showed the beautiful scenery that Oldfield has to offer. The Greg Norman designed course opened in 2001 and has since hosted numerous tournament events, including the the eGolf Tour. Oldfield demonstrated a compelling challenge for all competitors, but in the end everyone walked away all smiles from the lively weekend of golf.
The Boys 15-19 Division saw a first time winner take home the title. Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (HHIJGA) student Dak Spivey of Lloyd Harbor, NY carded rounds of 72, 71, and 75 to finish with a total score of 2-over-par 218.Spivey found himself tied for the lead after Saturday’s opening round and would prove that he was a force to be reckoned with after walking away with the wire-to-wire victory.Finishing in second place, Curtis Goldsberry of Athens, OH (HHIJGA) put together a solid round on the first day shooting 78. Goldsberry turned on the heat in the second round carding the lowest score of the Labor Day Tournament with a 70 and finished with a strong 71 on Monday to cement his position as the second place finisher only one stroke behind our champion.Third place honors in the division went to Ben Dietrich of Conover, North Carolina (HHIJGA).Dietrich put together three stellar days including back-to-back rounds of even par 72 on Saturday and Sunday and a hard fought 76 on the final day of the outing finishing with a 4-over 220.All three top finishers were pleased with their performances and look to be favorites in upcoming IJGT events.
With his first IJGT win, Spivey went on to say, “I hope that this is the first of many IJGT event wins this season.”He continued on saying that the best moment of the tournament was, “watching that final putt go in, knowing I sealed the tournament victory, it was a great feeling”.
Boys 14 and Under Division champion, Joseph Bowker of Weare, New Hampshire (HHIJGA), was able to take advantage of the pristine course conditions at Oldfield, carding steady rounds of 77, 74, and 82 for a tournament total of 17-over 233.The first time IJGT competitor got a win in the first tournament of the season highlighting an impressive margin of victory, 19 strokes in front of the closest competitor. The competition heated up for the second place finish between Alex Shattuck of Sioux Falls, South Dakota (HHIJGA), and Gus Uriostegui of Leon, Mexico (HHIJGA).
In the end Alex Shattuck grabbed hold of the second place victory by producing rounds of 86, 82, and 84 to surpass Uriostegui by one stroke.Gus shot well all three days posting scores of 79, 78, and 96.At the end of the day, all three competitors will be back to compete in future IJGT events ready for another chance to win 1st place honors.
We were fortunate enough to sit down with Bowker following his impressive victory.Bowker stated, “I was pretty nervous when I began the round today, especially when I started with a three putt on the first hole and triple bogeyed the second. But I pulled it together to finish my round and get the win”.
The Girls 19 and under division featured another new champion to its ranks Clementina Rodriguez of Caracas, Venezuela (HHIJGA).Posting extremely impressive rounds of 76, 74, and 72, she finished with a three day total of 6-over 222.Rodriguez is a first time IJGT competitor but plans on defending her tournament win this weekend (September 11-12) at Palmetto Hall on Hilton Head Island, SC.Rodriguez’s excitement showed as she always had a smile on her face and was very considerate of everyone she played against and interacted with.Beginning the round with a bogey was not here ideal start today, but after overcoming her nerves she was able to focus her skills and get the win.In second place, Laura Restrepo of Panama City, Panama (HHIJGA), improved dramatically each and every day as she got more familiar with the course.Restrepo shot rounds of 81, 78, and 72 to give her a tournament total of 15-over-par 231.Laura is also a first time IJGT event contestant and said, “I couldn’t do it without my coaches, family, and support of all my friends including [her classmate] Renato Bordes”.She was very excited to finally hit a great shot on hole No. 14 and avoid the water for the first time all weekend on Monday. As her putting improved, so did her confidence giving her the strength to finish second overall.Third place finisher Olivia Landino of Hermitage, PA (HHIJGA), shot consistent rounds of 79 and 78 on the first two days of the tournament.Landino finished the tournament with a three day total of 239.
With her first IJGT event win, Rodriguez went on to say, “I had a wonderful time all weekend, the highlight of my weekend happened today on the par-3 16th hole where I put a five-wood over the water to within two feet of my second career hole-in-one”.
