Yesterday, the first of three rounds of the Faldo Series US Grand Final presented by the International Junior Golf Tour had players from over 22 countries battling it out to earn their spot in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in 2018. Players from the four competitive divisions ended the day with a tight leaderboard heading into the final two rounds.
In the Boys U18 Division, Jairus Gaines and Ian Davis both shot 68 to be tied for the lead at 4-under-par. Gaines, a member of the Class of 2018 from Baltimore, MD, will be fighting for his 3rd IJGT win of the season – the previous two wins coming in his only two tournament starts at both Faldo Series Pennsylvania and New Jersey Championships. Gaines has been playing IJGT events since 2014 and has progressed from a scoring average of 87.5 in his first season to a scoring average of 71 this year.
Davis, who is only 14 years old playing in the older division, will be playing for his second win, after shooting 68, 73 to win the Disney Classic earlier in November.
Following close behind Gaines and Davis, Simone Collozza (Italy, 2019), Dongjin Park (South Korea, 2019) and Teddy Tetak (Slovakia, 2018) all shot 69 (-3) to be one stroke back going into the second round.
In the Boys U16 Division, Evan Owan, a member of the Class of 2019 from Germantown, MD shot 68 (-4) and holds a 1-stroke lead. Shooting 69 (-3) and in sole second place is Niels Schmidlin (Switzerland, 2019).
Annie Kim leads the Girls U18 Division after shooting 70 (-2). Kim is from South Korea and is a member of the Class of 2018. She has signed to play golf at Vanderbilt University next year.
2017 Girls Division Player of the Year, Ying-Ting Hsieh shot even-par 72 yesterday to lead the Girls U16 Division and will be playing for her 3rd win of the year.
