Corry completes comeback

Lopatcong, N.J. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) traveled to Architects Golf Club to host The Architects Cup on April 12-13, 2014. Temperatures were in the 60s for both rounds. The field of 90 competitors battled for IJGT Merit Points, AJGA Stars, and national rankings as well as an invite to the IJGT’s Bridgestone Tournament of Champions to be played at Grand Cypress Resort on May 24-26, 2014.

 

DAVIS

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Ryan Davis, of Berkeley Heights, N.J., took first place by scoring under par in both rounds. Davis was coming into this event off a tie for eighth place at the Thanksgiving Day Classic at TPC SawgrassHe made four birdies and 11 pars in round one. He also added a streak of 10 consecutive holes where he made par or better, including two of his four total birdies. He finished the day at 1-under-par and a lead in the division. Davis was just as consistent during the final round. He added three birdies and an impressive eagle on the 532-yard par-5.  He played extremely well on the back nine. Davis carded a 3-under-par score of 33 on the back nine to close out his final round. His 2-under-par total score of 140 won his division by three strokes. Davis’ weekend numbers were 70-70-140 overall.

When asked what was working well for him, Davis replied, “My driving was the key. I hit a lot of fairways and that set me up for good approach shots.”

Curren Mody of Monmouth Junction, N.J., and John Felitto of Mountainside, N.J., finished tied for second place. Mody posted scores of 71-72—143, while Felitto posted scores of 74-69—143. Felitto’s 2-under-par score of 69 won the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. This award goes to the player that shoots the lowest score during the final round of the tournament.

Corry

In the Girls Division, Rachel Corry of Ridgefield, Conn., came from behind to win the Architects Cup. In round one, Corry totaled 12 pars. Her back nine score of 1-under-par 35 gave her momentum to make a comeback in the final round. She had no bogeys during her back nine and added a birdie on the par-3 hole number two. Corry headed into the final round trailing the division leader by two strokes. In the final round she made 13 pars. She played very well on her back nine once again to close out her round. She went 1-under-par on her last seven holes with a birdie on hole number eight. Corry won her division by a total of three strokes. Her numbers for the weekend were 75-76—151.

When asked about how she was able to score on the front nine both day, Corry said, “I liked the setup of the front nine, my back nine, it really played to my shot better. I just tried to stay calm and stay hydrated which led to a good round.”

There was a four-way tie for second place between  Linda Wang of Fresh Meadows, N.Y., Allyson Wentworth of Stewartsville, N.J., Megan McLean of Lebanon, N.J., and Yeji Shin of Norwood, N.J.. Wang’s numbers for the weekend were 80-74–154. Wentworth posted scores of 77-77—154. McLean’s numbers were 78-76—154 and Shin’s numbers were75-79—154. Wang’s final round score of 74 won her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

IsztwanIn the Boys 14 & Under Division, Brian Isztwan of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., won his respective division by a total of six strokes. In round one, Isztwan made three birdies, all of which came on the par-5 holes. He added 10 pars to finish day one with a 2-over-par score of 73. Headed into the final round, Isztwan held a one stroke lead in the division. He started out shaky with four bogeys on his front nine, but turned it around on the back nine. Isztwan went on to shoot a 2-under-par score of 33 on his final nine holes. During that stretch, he made two birdies, again coming on both of the par-5 holes. He closed out the final round by making par at the final six holes. Isztwan posted scores of 73-72—145.

When asked about what was working well for him, Isztwan said, “I hit a ton of greens and my short game was much better it normally is so that just put it over the top for me.”

Leo Hernandez of Stewartsville, N.J., finished in second place with scores of 74-77—151. Griffin Smith of Holland, Pa., took third place. His numbers for the weekend were 74-79—153.
