The IJGT is excited to announce that the schedule for the Bridgestone Tournament of Champions is ready for release, and it is going to be a fun-filled weekend of competition and recognition for our members!
This three-day event over Memorial Day weekend (May 24-26, 2014) will include three-rounds of Jack Nicklaus-designed golf at the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fl. on the East/North Course, as well as the Scotland-inspired New Course. The East Course has an iconic island green on hole no. 5, as well as a wooded terrain with few bunkers. The North Course requires a bit more accuracy, with ledged fairways and plateaued greens throughout the course.
However, the New Course is an entirely different experience. Based off the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland, this links style masterpiece has every aspect one would expect. From double greens to stone bridges, and including the famed deep bunkers of links-style golf, this course will be a challenge and an honor to compete on for the Bridgestone Tournament of Champions title.
Last year, the champions included Michael Werenski of South Hadley, Pa. (Boys 15-19 Division), Davis Shore of Knoxville, Tn. (Boys U-14 Division), and Thamonpat Siriko of Bangkok, Thailand (Girls Division). Werenski took the title with a 3-stroke lead, shooting a 1-under 215 for the weekend. Davis finished with a 4-stroke lead, turning in a 1-over 217 for the individual victory. Siriko, who will return to defend her crown in this year’s championship, also won with a 4-stroke lead, beating the field with a 4-over 220 score.
National rankings will be in high supply for this tournament, with the AJGA providing 110 Performance Stars for the weekend. In addition, the IJGT will announce it’s 2013-2014 All-IJGT Team, showcasing the top-10 players on the tour from each division. The IJGT will also announce the IJGT Player of the Year during the weekend.
On Friday, the IJGT invites players and parents to a Welcome Reception during registrations – come meet us at the Grand Cypress Scoreboard and mingle with the IJGT staff and other players before the competition begins. Food and drinks will be provided courtesy of the IJGT. Players are also welcome to an optional practice round on this day.
On Saturday after the first round, players will receive a park ticket to the Universal Studios park of their choice, between either Universal Studios Florida or Universal Studios Islands of Adventure. The IJGT staff will distribute the tickets immediately after the players’ rounds, and attendance at either park is optional.
On Sunday, the IJGT will host the “Night of Champions” banquet from 6PM – 8PM at Universal Studios Florida. The dress code for this red carpet affair will be dresses for women, and slacks, shirt, and tie for the men. The IJGT will provide dinner for players and one guest, and all RSVP’s must be in by May 12, 2014. Additional tickets will be sold, if needed. The “Night of Champions” will showcase the 2013-2014 All-IJGT Team, as well as the IJGT Player of the Year.
