DC Shootout at National Golf Club – Final results (Oct. 5, 2014)

Scilaris holds on for two rounds for a victory
Powderly captures a commanding victory

FORT WASHINGTON, Md. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) continued its fall season hosting the DC Shootout at National Golf Club at National Golf Club at Tantallon. The two-day 36-hole tournament featured more than 15 juniors competing for National Rankings and IJGT merit points. Despite strong winds throughout the tournament, juniors braved the elements to finish strong.

DSC06698In the Boys 15-19 Division, Taso Scilaris of Bethesda, Md., held on for two rounds to capture first place. Going into round two, Scilaris led the division sitting one stroke ahead of second place finisher Kent Kamenicky of Waldorf, Md.. Scilaris’ strong finish on the back nine was the key factor to maintaining the lead. He recorded par or better on 12 holes en route to a final-round score of 75 to capture the title.

When asked about his victory, Scilaris stated, “Today’s win felt very good because Tantallon is a tough golf course and I had to play my best game to win. Although nervous, I knew if I just played my game I would do well.”

Second place went to Kamenicky, who finished with a 78-82 – 160 overall score. Rounding out the top three was Michael Jones of Potomac, Md., finishing with a score of 78-83 – 161 overall.

The winner of the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award went to Scilaris and Liam Powderly of Cockeysville, Md., who both finished round two with a low score of 75. The Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award is awarded to the player(s) who shoot the lowest score during the final round.

DSC06696Playing in his first IJGT event of the 2014-2015 season, Powderly took first place in the Boys 14 & Under Division with scores of 74-75 – 149. Going into round two, Powderly sat two strokes behind then leader Jack Halleron of Timonium, Md. His strong start on the front nine allowed him to take a commanding lead. He recorded par or better on his first nine holes.

In discussing his victory, Powderly stated, “Going into round two, my strategy was to keep my ball on the fairways and greens. Although I drove the ball much further today, I need to improve on my putting.”

Halleron took second with scores of 72-78 – 150 while Ford Bennett of Owing Mills, Md., took third with scores of 86-78 – 164 overall.

DSC06693In the Girls Division, MacKenzie Martin of Rye, N.Y., took first place. Playing in her first IJGT event of the 2014-2015 season, Martin finished with a score of 100-91 – 191 overall.

When asked about her win, Martin stated, “My drives were very good, but I need to work on my putting and chipping. Going into the second round, I focused on keeping the ball in front of me and on the fairway which helped to improve my second round score.”
