The IJGT’s Southeast Tour hosted its first Discovery Tour event of the 2014 year at Oldfield Golf Club on April 12, 2014. All Discovery Tour events provide an opportunity for juniors to play some of golf’s top venues, learn the rules of tournament play and meet other players of the same age in a fun and competitive atmosphere. The event was a nine-hole single round of golf that allowed for a parent or family member to caddy the juniors.
The Discovery Tour at Oldfield Golf Club featured a line up of five budding junior golfers. With family and friends present to support them the players took to the course for fierce competition. Ethan “EZ E” Kalk of South Glastonbury, Conn., finished in first with a nine-hole score of 39. Kalk’s round featured consistent pars on seven of nine holes. After the tournament, Kalk proudly thanked his father for being his caddy and accompanying him to the event.
Despite his self-proclaimed struggle on the front nine, Jonathan Griz of Bluffton, S.C., finished in second with a score of 45. Griz displayed focus and determination as he hit fairways on each of his drives.
Rounding out the top three was Dazhuang Li of Sheyang, China. Li capitalized on tough holes including the pars he made on both par-3’s on the front nine. Li was enthusiastic the entire round, readily embracing the primary rule of having fun!
Caleb Morante and Jack McGoldrick, both Hilton Head Island, S.C., natives also played well, expending every ounce of energy and passion into their rounds. There was no shortage of commendable golf and laughter.
Fun was had by participants, parents, family and IJGT staff alike! The IJGT looks forward to the next Discovery Tour event at Palmetto Hall on April 26, 2014.
