First-round highlights from the Aiken Junior Open at Woodside Plantation

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) wrapped up the first round of the Aiken Junior Open at Woodside Plantation Country Club on Sept. 21.

Taking place on the gorgeous Wisteria Course designed by Rees Jones, Day 1 presented the players with challenging hills, luscious greens, and scattered rain storms. While none of the 28 junior golfers came out even or under par, that isn’t to say there were no exciting moments!

In the Boys 15-19 Division, the gifted Aaron Terrazas, of Veracruz, Mexico leads the way with a 1-over par 73.  Terrazas, overcoming a slow start on the front 9 (four bogeys), mastered a turnaround on the back 9, nailing three birdies on the final eight holes — including one on the long 529-yard, par 5 No. 14. Terrazas is followed by Jake Kessel (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) in second place with a 5-over 77. There is a tie for third place, with four players coming into the clubhouse at 80(+8) on the day.

Kelly Whaley (Farmington, Conn.), playing in her first IJGT event of the season, leads the Girls Division with a cool 3-over 75 through 18. Her performance, including 14 consecutive pars on Nos. 2-15, lands her two shots ahead of Samantha Huang of Shenzen, China, who finished the round with a 77.

The Boys 14 & Under Division sees a familiar face in first place after Day 1, with Takafumi Shimoji of Okinawa, Japan sitting atop the leaderboard, owning a 2-over par 74. His 36-38, including birdies on Nos. 5, 14, and 15 keeps him five shots ahead of Karl Vilips, of Melbourne, Australia.
