Gusty winds and cooler than normal temperatures made for difficult golfing conditions as the IJGT held the first round of the Carolina Classic at Colleton River Plantation on January 25, 2014. Held at the site of the 2015 US Junior Amateur, the field featured 63 players representing 16 countries. In addition to competing with the weather, juniors are eagerly competing for national rankings and IJGT Merit Points.
Round one featured tight competition in the Boys 15-19 Division as Will Miles of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Matt Cheng of Taipei, Taiwan, remain tied for first. Leading the Boys 15-19 Division with a score of 2-over-par 74, here are Miles’s and Cheng’s round in numbers:
11 – number of holes made par
8 – number of holes he made par in the back nine holes
4 – stroke lead over the rest of the Boys 15-19 Division
3 – birdies tallied on the front nine
1 – first tournament of the 2014 year
37 – score on both the front and back nines
19 – 19th place finish last year at Colleton River Plantation
4 – fourth season playing in IJGT Events
2 – number of birdies on the back nine
With the weather being such an influencing factor, pace of play backed up as the field worked their way through the course. The Girls Division and the Boys 14 & Under Division both have players who did not finish in the time allotted for round one. These players will resume the final holes of play at 10:30am Sunday, January 26, 2014. Round two will commence immediately following the completion of round one with a 12:00pm shotgun.
Reduced winds and temperatures nearing 60 are anticipated which should improve overall conditions and scores heading into round two of the Carolina Classic on Sunday, January 26, 2014.
