First-round highlights from the Major Championship at Palmetto Dunes

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The weather could not have been more perfect — save some slight winds — for the first round of the International Junior Golf Tour‘s (IJGT) Major Championship at Palmetto Dunes on Nov. 9. Held on the intricately-designed and aesthetically-captivating George Fazio Course at the Palmetto Dunes Resort, the Nov. 9-10 event featured more than 90 players from 21 states and 18 countries. The players are eagerly fighting for national rankings and DOUBLE IJGT Merit Points, and with a deeply stacked field of talent and skill, the final round is sure to be filled with just as much excitement as the first. Here are your leaders going into the final round on Sunday, Nov. 10.

In the Boys 15-19 DivisionEwen Ferguson of Hilton Head Island, S.C., leads the way with a tournament-low 1-under-par 69 through Round 1. Here is Ferguson’s round by the numbers:

35 – score on the front nine (even-par)

34 – score on the back nine (1-under-par)

11 – number of pars

7 – straight pars to start his round

4 – number of birdies (22.2% of his scores); also his stroke lead going into final round

3 – number of seasons playing on the IJGT

Atop the leaderboard in the Boys 14 & Under Division is Karl Vilips of Melbourne, Australia, who sits with a 6-over-par 76 after one round. Here is Vilips’s round by the numbers:

4 – stroke lead going into the final round
