First round highlights from the Scottsdale Open at Troon North

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) held the first round of the Scottsdale Open at Troon North on Dec. 14, 2013. The two-day, 36-hole event is taking place on the club’s breathtaking, par-71 Pinnacle Course, where views of Arizona’s Pinnacle Peak mountains line each hole, and where giant granite boulders and towering cacti challenge the players for a true desert golf experience.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Samuel Foust of Edina, Minn., leads the way with a 2-under-par 69 going into the final round of play. Here is Foust’s first round by the numbers:

Samuel Foust:

31 – score on the front nine (4-under-par)

9 – number of pars (50% of his scores)

6 – number of birdies (33.3% of his scores)

4 – stroke lead going into the final round

1 – this is Foust’s first appearance with the IJGT

-1 – score on the course’s par-3s and par-4s

The Boys 14 & Under Division has a first-round leader in Jack Whisler of Scottsdale, Ariz., who shot an 83 through 18 holes. Here is Whisler’s round by the numbers:

Jack Whisler:

38 – score on the front nine (3-over-par)

14 – stroke lead going into the final round

10 – number of pars (55.6% of his scores)

4 – his longest streak of pars on the days (on Nos. 4-7)

+2 – score on the course’s par-3s and par-5s

2 – this is Whisler’s second event with the IJGT (after a win at the West Coast Kickoff at TPC
