The IJGT’s Northeast Tour traveled to the fan-favorite Architects Golf Club in Lopatcong, N.J., to host The Architects Cup. Heavy rains the night and morning before the first round on October 4, 2014, made for soft conditions on the golf course. Along with early tee times in the final round came cold temperatures. Architects Golf Club was in prime shape and players that were able to get the ball rolling on the challenging greens were able to grab a handful of birdies and post some competitive scores. The IJGT is proud to award this week’s Northeast Player of the Week honors to Leo Hernandez of Stewartsville, N.J., and Ami Gianchandani of Short Hills, N.J.
Hernandez began the tournament with a slow start in his first round, but he bounced back in round two. He posted a 75 in the second round, improving on his first round by ten strokes. Hernandez carded his 75 with the help of 12 pars and a rare birdie on the uphill par-3 No. 8. Hernandez’s 75 was tied for the third best round of the day in the Boys 15-19 Division. His impressive play in the final round drove him up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 20th place.
Gianchandani’s first round play had her in pursuit of a comeback on then leaders Megan McClean of Lebanon N.J., and Allyson Wentworth of Stewartsville, N.J. Gianchandani came out firing at pins and sinking putts for birdie early in her second round to put some pressure on the leaders. Birdies on the second, fifth and sixth holes allowed her to make the turn at 3-under-par. Wentworth’s steady play in the final round kept Gianchandani just out of reach, but Gianchandani fought until the end which helped her earn the Northeast’s Girls’ Player of the Week honors as well as the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award with an even-par 71. Along with her three birdies on the opening nine, Gianchandani added 12 pars on the day. Her impressive second round gave her second place honors, finishing only three strokes back of champion, Wentworth.
The IJGT’s Southeast Tour headed north for a change to host the DC Shootout at National Golf Club at Tantallon in Ft. Washington, Md., on October 4-5, 2014. The course was in great shape and although tough, the 18 juniors enjoyed the challenge presented. MacKenzie Martin of Rye, N.Y., and Jack Halleron of Timonium, Md., were named the Southeast’s Players of the Week honors.
In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Halleron played extremely well in round one shooting the low round for the tournament, an even par, 72 with 12 pars and three birdies, on a day that did not see very many low scores. His three birdies came at a time that proved to be crucial: holes 13, 15 and 18. In round two, Halleron started off strong with birdies on the first two holes and finished the round shooting a 78 to earn second place.
In the Girls Division, Martin’s tournament was one that was a story of two rounds. Martin, after shooting a 100 on the first day, returned to round two and bettered her first round score by a total nine strokes. She carded four pars in round two en route to victory and a total score for the tournament of 191. The DC Shootout was Martin’s first-ever IJGT event.
Congratulations to the players of the week Leo Hernandez, Ami Gianchandani, MacKenzie Martin and Jack Halleron for their outstanding performances in a challenging competition. We wish them best of luck in the rest of their fall golf schedule and are excited to see what lies ahead for them!
