Two IJGT alumni, Mark Folkwein and Phimnipha (Sandy) Wongwaiwate, both notched second place finishes in their respective collegiate events over the Sept. 27-30 weekend.
Folkwein, a sophomore at George Mason University and IJGA Post-Graduate alum from New Albany, Ohio, earned runner-up honors at the school’s only Fall home event, the Patriot Intercollegiate, on Sept. 28-29. Located at the Laurel Hills Golf Course in Lorton, Va., Folkwein led his Patriots team with a final 2-under-par 211 through 54 holes. After a slow first round start which gave him a 3-over-par 74, Folkwein rebounded with a 3-under 68 and 2-under 69 in Rounds 2 and 3, respectively. His Round 2, 3-under 68 was the second lowest round of the tournament.
Folkwein competed in more than 20 IJGT events during the 2011-2012 season, garnering two wins and 13 other Top-10 finishes. He and the Patriots can be seen next at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate on Oct. 20-22 in Kitty Hawk, N.C.

Wongwaiwate, a Yale University freshman and 2013 IJGA Graduate from Chiang Mai, Thailand, tied for second at the Nittany Lion Women’s Invitational in State College, Pa., on Sept. 27-29. Her 72-70-74 performance in the three-round event gave her a final even-par 216, just four strokes behind winner (and fellow IJGT alum) Jennifer Ha. Wongwaiwate’s skillful stroke play led her to a field-best, 2-under-par 70 in the second round, which put her atop the leaderboard with two other golfers going into the third round on Sept. 29. Though her final round effort was not her best, shooting a 2-over-par 74, she managed to keep her score low enough to sustain a second place finish.
Wongwaiwate was a lights-out player while on tour for the IJGT, competing in six events during the 2012-2013 season, where she won three and was runner-up in the remaining three tournaments. You can catch her and the Yale Bulldogs in action at the upcoming Sacred Heart Fall Classic on Oct. 20-21 in Milford, Conn.
