IJGA Invitational at Sea Pines – Final Results (Dec. 14, 2014)

Tadokoro wins second consecutive IJGT tournament
Go shoots 3-under-par 69 in round one

The IJGT finished its fall season with one of the biggest events of the year, the IJGA Invitational at Sea Pines. The two-day, 36-hole event was played on both the Ocean Course and Harbour Town Golf Links on December 13-14, 2014. The field competed for Junior Heritage and Hudson Junior Invitational exemptions as well as IJGT merit points and national rankings.

A frost delay on the first day forced the junior golfers to race against the setting sun on both courses, but the entire field of over 100 golfers was able to finish round one before dark. Round two on the Ocean Course also started with a frost delay but the temperature quickly rose to create comfortable playing conditions.

Shiso Go

Shiso Go of Kanagawa, Japan, was the only golfer to finish round one under par. He finished day one with a 3-under-par 69 on the Ocean Course. Although he was nervous on the back nine at Harbour Town, he performed well enough to take home the championship with a tournament total of 2-over-par 145. Go jumped out to an early lead with the help of five birdies in round one. Moving the the arguably more difficult of the two courses for round two, Go aimed for consistency, scoring par on 11 of 18 holes to hold onto the divisional lead.

Go performed slightly better on the Ocean Course, but Harbour Town is his favorite. “I like Harbour Town,” Go said. “Harbour Town is so hard, I want to play Harbour Town again.” Go had a division-best bogey-free streak that lasted 23 consecutive holes. It started on hole No. 4 in round one and continued through hole No. 8 in round two.

Hilton Head Island, S.C., native Nicholas Russell finished second in his division with a tournament total of 3-over-par 146. Russell led his division in pars with 25. Xue Wen Luo of Haikou, China, and Aaron Terrazas of Veracruz, Mexico, tied for third with two-day totals of 147.

Russell and Luo’s second round score of even-par 72 earned them the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female junior to card the lowest score in the final round of the event.

Sera Tadokoro

In the Girls Division, Sera Tadokoro of Osaka, Japan, brought home an IJGT title for the second consecutive tournament. Tadokoro won the Savannah Junior at The Landings on December 6-7, 2014 . Tadokoro scored an even-par 72 in round one on the Ocean Course, giving her confidence heading into round two. “I was a little bit nervous, but I did my best,” Tadokoro said.

Tadokoro carded five birdies in round two, putting her in position to share the divisional lead at the conclusion of the round. She played her second round on Harbour Town and despite tougher holes and faster greens, par was the name of her game as she went on to card par on all but five holes.

Bluffton, S.C., native Kayla Kozak and Mind Puangcharoen of Chonburi, Thailand, tied for second in the Girls Division, finishing with tournament totals of 153.

Dong Jin Park

Dong Jin Park of Seoul, South Korea, took home the crown in the Boys 14 & Under Division with a tournament total of 148. Park also kicked off his tournament on the Ocean Course, beginning his performance with par on his first six consecutive holes. Adding a birdie on both nines before he finished, Park maneuvered himself into control of the division by one stroke. Once the division moved to Harbour Town to finish out the event, Park approached the challenge with focus and determination. Park carded four birdies, the most for the division, and held on for the win.

Park enjoyed the challenge offered by Harbour Town Golf Links. “I think I like Harbour Town more because Harbour Town is harder so I had to focus more than the Ocean Course,” said Park.

Yujie Jin of Windermere, Fla., finished second with a total score of 159 and Thomas Pfoestl of Schenna, Italy, finished third with a two-day total 163.

The IJGT will continue tournament play when it kicks of the spring 2015 season on January 17-18 for the IJGT Junior at Hilton Head National. To sign up for this event, or others, visit www.IJGT.com or call (843) 686-1500.
