IJGT Alum Sandy Wongwaiwate wins Sacred Heart Fall Classic

Recent International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) alum and current Yale University freshman, Sandy Wongwaiwate, has added another impressive finish to her young, yet already bright, college resume with a win at the Sacred Heart Fall ClassicHosted by Sacred Heart University and held at the Great River Golf Club in Milford, Conn., on Oct. 20-21, 2013, the 36-hole event came down to the wire, with a three-way tie for first leading to a playoff to determine the outright winner and medalists.

Despite the course being in great condition, the chilly October weather made for tough play across the board. After a first-round 5-over-par 77 put Wongwaiwate in a tie for second place with teammate, Elisabeth Bernabe, she was determined to catch the leader, Alison Kruse of Seton Hall, who was just three strokes ahead in the standings at 2-over-par 74. Monday’s final round brought in another identical performance for the two Bulldogs, with Wongwaiwate and Bernabe both tallying an 80. This outing put Wongwaiwate in a three-way tie for first place, after Kruse’s final round of 83 leveled the playing field for the three top golfers.

Gunning for the top individual medalist honors, Wongwaiwate, Bernabe and Kruse went into a playoff, where Wongwaiwate propelled herself to a victory. This win, along with her team’s performance, gave the Yale University Bulldogs a second place finish behind Kruse and Seton Hall.

This is the first collegiate victory for Wongwaiwate as a Bulldog, and follows her recent second place finish at the Nittany Lion Invitational which took place in State College, Pa., on Sept. 27-29.

Wongwaiwate, a 2013 International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA) graduate, dominated the competition as a lights-out player on the IJGT. In six IJGT Events during the 2012-2013 season, she won three and finished as a runner-up in the remaining three, with one of her most notable victories coming at the 5th Annual Hank Haney Invitational on Dec. 8-9, 2012.

Wongwaiwate and the Bulldogs can be seen in action next at the William & Mary Invitational on Mar. 16-18, 2014 at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
