IJGT Junior at Palmetto Dunes – Final Results (March 1, 2015)

Hui victorious after four-hole playoff

Greenplate wins Boys 14 & Under Division by six strokes

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) returned to Hilton Head Island to host the IJGT Junior at Palmetto Dunes on February 28-March 1, 2015. Despite the cold, cloudy and rainy conditions, juniors performed admirably during the two-day, 36-hole event. Juniors competed for IJGT Merit Points and national rankings.

SherngAfter 36 holes, Yong Sherng Hui of Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, and Jason Stokes of St. Brelade, Jersey, each had tournament totals of 150 to force a playoff. They matched each other stroke for stroke on the first playoff hole, both carding birdies on the par-5 hole No. 10. The playoff continued to hole No. 18, where both players made par. The duo returned to hole No. 10 where they stayed neck and neck by making par. The action then returned to the 18th hole, where Hui won the fourth playoff hole and locked down his victory in the Boys 15-19 Division. When asked how he remained focused during the playoff, Hui kept it simple responding, “Just hit the ball straight.”

Hui knocked 10 strokes off his round one score to card an even-par 70 in round two. He led his division in birdies with seven. He birdied the par-5 10th hole in both rounds. His second round even-par 70 earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female junior to card the lowest score in the final round of the event.

Stokes started the second round strong making par on the first seven holes and finished the tournament in second place. In third was Chandler McDowell of Springbrook, Canada with a 153 tournament total.

Evan GreenplateHilton Head Island, S.C., native Evan Greenplate ran away with the Boys 14 & Under Division, winning by six strokes. Greenplate had a two-stroke lead after round one and shaved six strokes off his round one score to finish with a tournament total of 156.

The highlight of the tournament for Greenplate came in round two. “I had back-to-back birdies on the front nine and back nine so that was pretty fun,” he recalled. His birdies came on the par-3 sixth hole, par-4 seventh hole, par-4 13th hole and the par-3 14th hole.

Jackson Skeen of Johnson City, Tenn., finished in second with a tournament total of 164. Chase Phillips and Yuxuan Zou, both of Hilton Head Island, S.C., finished just two strokes behind Skeen to finish in third with tournament totals of 166.

Cake 1In the Girls Division, Cake Phuchanbanchob of Chiang Mai, Thailand, made par 11 times in round one on her way to victory. She enjoyed round one noting, “Everything was just kind of nice going.” She finished with a 151 tournament total. Her second round 78 earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the girls.

Ashni Dhruva of Katy, Texas, finished in second with a tournament total of 158. Bluffton, S.C., Sophie Guo and Sera Tadokoro of Osaka, Japan, had tournament totals of 161 to tie for third.
