San Francisco, Calif. – The IJGT traveled west to San Francisco, Calif., to host the Major Championship at the Presidio Golf Course February 1-2, 2014. The two day 36-hole tournament featured a competitive field of 38 players across three Divisions. Competing for IJGT Merit Points and national rankings, players battled through both rain and shine for first. Being the first of the west coast Events, the IJGT staff was thrilled to work with juniors based largely from the west. While round one brought with it beautiful California sunshine, day two brought challenging wind and rain. Despite the worsened conditions of day two, many players still posted improved round-two scores. Sasha Lobel of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Bibilani Liu of Cupertino, Ca., both earned Player of the Week honors after placing in the top three in their respective Divisions.
In his third year with the IJGT, Lobel has seen a significant improvement in his golf game. His second-place finish marked his first top-three finish in an IJGT Event, a significant improvement from placement in Events played in years prior. Lobel’s 81-71–152 overall performance was highlighted by seven birdies, the most in the Boys 15-19 Division. Adding in par finishes on 17 of 36 holes, he posted a nine-hole bogey-free streak in round two. Lobel is also a member of the First Tee of Pittsburgh program.
Liu joined the Major Championship as a fresh face competing in her first ever IJGT Event. The California native made an noteworthy first impression as she made par on 23 of 36 holes, proving consistency was key. Liu was the front-runner of both rounds in the Girls Division and tallied just one double bogey for the entire tournament, finishing with a score of 79-79–158 overall. Grateful for her membership to the First Tee program, Liu hopes that the Major Championship is the first of many IJGT Events in which she will participate.
