HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The IJGT stopped at Dolphin Head Golf Club this past weekend to host the Island Open. There were scattered rain showers during round one and a 30-minute fog delay to start the final round, but it turned out to be a great weekend with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Junior golfers ranging in age from 13-19 years old and representing 15 different countries competed for IJGT Merit Points and National Rankings. The champion from each division received an invite to IJGT’s Bridgestone Tournament of Champions to be played at Grand Cypress Resort in Florida on May 24-26, 2014. Luigi D’Amico of Forli, Italy, earned Player of the Week honors after placing in the top three. Milleina Ohara is the Player of the Week in the Girls Division after she won the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.
The Island Open at Dolphin Head was D’Amico’s 10th IJGT Event this season. He finished in third place in the Boys 15-19 Division posting a score of 76-75–151. His third place finish in this event marks the sixth time that D’Amico has finished within the top-10. He finished round one on a high point, making an eagle on the par-five 18th hole. During the final round, he scored two birdies on the first and 18th holes. He finished both rounds with 13 pars and managed to par every par three hole throughout the weekend. D’Amico attends the IJGA and we look forward to seeing him at future IJGT events.[/column]
In only her second IJGT season, Ohara has three top-10 finishes. After recently taking first place in the Island Challenge at Country Club of Hilton, Ohara struggled a bit during round one of the Island Open, but managed to turn it around on the final day. She scored a 2-over-par 72 during the final round, which was only matched by the Girls Division Champion earning them both the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. She had 12 pars and two birdies during round two to turnaround her round-one performance. Her scores for the weekend were 88-74–162 overall. This event was Ohara’s sixth IJGT Event of the season and we look forward to seeing her again at upcoming tournaments.[/column]
