The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted the Thanksgiving Day Classic at TPC Sawgrass on Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Ponte Vedra, Fla. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was held over Thanksgiving weekend and featured 105 players. The tournament consisted of two rounds on Pete Dye’s Valley Course, with the final round being played at TPC Sawgrass’s renowned Stadium Course. The IJGT Player of the Week honors for Nov. 29-Dec. 1 go to Ryan Davis of Berkeley Heights, NJ and Cake Phuchanbanchob of Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Phuchanbanchob, a 16 year old in the Girls Division, played very consistent throughout the weekend. She shot the best score in the Girls Division on the Valley Course. She finished her first round with a score of 5-over-par 77. For the second round Phuchanbanchob managed to shoot 6-over-par, 78 with 20 mph winds and difficult weather conditions. Phuchanbanchob was battling Rei Nakatani this whole weekend. Nakatani outlasted Phuchanbanchob on the last day to take home the victory, with Phuchanbanchob finishing second. Her second place finish her best finish this year on the IJGT. Phuchanbanchob finished with a tournament total of 27-over-par, 243. Phuchanbanchob will use her second place finish as a momentum builder for upcoming events.
Ryan Davis found himself in a tie for 18th place after the first two rounds on the Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass. Davis battled the high winds and shot scores of 89 on Friday and 83 on Saturday. The final round brought less winds and warmer temperatures and Davis took advantage. Playing in the fourth group off No. 1, Davis was able to make an early charge at the leaders. A front nine score of 39, with three bogeys and six pars, put him at 3-over heading to the back nine. During the back nine, Davis shot 1-under, highlighted by two birdies. With a final round of 74, Davis cracked the top 10 for the first time in his IJGT career. His 74 was the second-lowest final round score in the Boys 15-19 Division. Davis will look to get off to a hot start in the 2014 season after his top 10 finish over the weekend.
