IJGT Returns to Falcon's Fire for the Orlando Junior

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) is set to return to Kissimmee, Fla., for the Orlando Junior at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club May 11-12. After a successful tournament at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club last September, the IJGT is excited to be back in Florida. The Event will feature elite junior golfers ages 9-19 from around the world competing for national recognition and IJGT Merit Points.

Falcon's FireLocated just minutes from the Walt Disney World Resort, Falcon’s Fire Golf Club was ranked “Best Places to Play” by Golf Digest 2010-2011. A Rees Jones designed course, Falcon’s Fire features plenty of bunkers and fairway undulation, requiring accurate tee-shot placement and touch around the greens. Falcon’s Fire is recognized both regionally and nationally as one of the finest public golf courses in the Orlando area.

The field for this Event is filling up quickly as anticipation builds for the Bridgestone Tournament of Champions held at Grand Cypress Golf Club, in Orlando, Fla., May 25-27.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, three former IJGT champions are returning to the tour. Manuel Velez of Panama City, Panama will attempt to defend his Falcon’s Fire title at the Orlando Junior. Last September, Velez won the Florida Swing at Falcon’s Fire. Matt Cheng of Taipei, Taiwan is coming off a more recent win at the College Classic at Duke University and will try to take the title from Velez. Luke Tetreault of Horseheads, N.Y., went home with the title in late March at the Lowcountry Junior at Oldfield Golf Club. With these three former champions already in the field the Orlando Junior is sure to be an exciting Event.

The Boys 14 Under Division will feature another former IJGT champions. Andre Becerra of Zapopan, Mexico will be competing in the Orlando Junior hoping to take home his fourth IJGT title of the 2012-2013 season.  Becerra has seven top-5 finishes already this season, including his victory at the Florida Swing at Falcon’s Fire in September. He will not be without competition, however. Paul Schumacher of Canton, Ohio, will attempt to take home his first IJGT title this season. Schumacher had an impressive second-place finish at Falcon’s Fire in September.

The Girls Division will be equally exciting. Thamonpat Siriko of Bangkok, Thailand, is coming off a win at an American Junior Golf Association preseason event. Siriko was named champion at the IJGT Georgia Open at Savannah Quarters last October, and has 10 top-5 finishes already for the 2012-2013 season. Rei Nakatani of Tokyo, Japan, already has three IJGT titles for the season and 15 top-5 finishes. Nakatani is always a player to watch during IJGT Events. Kelly Whaley of Farmington, Conn., returns to the IJGT after an impressive second-place finish at the College Classic at Duke University. Whaley has consistently finished inside the top five at IJGT Events and will definitely be a contender for the title at the Orlando Junior.

The Orlando Junior will begin May 11, at 7:30 a.m. with groups teeing off Nos. 1 and 10. The Event will conclude with an awards ceremony recognizing the top three juniors in each division with tournament gifts and trophies immediately following the conclusion of the final group on May 12.
