Inserra, Teran nab IJGT Player of the Week honors (Nov. 11, 2014)

The IJGT traveled to West End, N.C., on November 8-9, 2014, to host the Major Championship at Dormie Club. Rated the No. 2 course to play in the state of North Carolina by Golfweek, the course offered an entertaining challenge to each junior.  The course was in pristine shape and despite the greens being firm and fast, the juniors rose to the occasion and posted admirable scores both days. This week’s IJGT Player of the Week honors following the Major Championship go to Brett Inserra of Upper Saddle River, N.J., and Gabriela Teran of Managua, Nicaragua.

Brett Inserra

Brett Inserra

Inserra’s first round score of 82 put him in a tie for 19th place in a field full of strong players.  In his opening round Inserra started off slowly, struggling with a few bogeys. Never fully embracing a momentum, he finished the round with a four-hole par-or-better streak which included his single birdie of the day. With the determination to make up ground, Inserra returned for round two by carding par-or-better on the entire front nine. Four round-two birdies combined with 12 pars allowed Inserra to improve by a staggering 13 strokes and move him up the leaderboard into the top three. Inserra shared third place with Tennoshin Ogawa of Ichinomiya-shi, Japan, with a two-day total of 151 and brought home the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for shooting the lowest final round across both boys’ divisions.

In three appearances in a Major Championship, this is Inserra’s first top-three finish.

Gabriela Teran

Teran’s first round started off hot with a birdie on the par-4 No. 2.  Seven pars on her front nine had her at even-par at the turn. On the back nine, she carded another birdie the par-4 No. 14, bringing her first round score to75. Within reach of divisional leader Kelly Whaley of Farmington, Conn., and looking to advance, Teran’s began her second round with consistent play. Scoring par on 12 of 18 holes, Teran finished shy of moving into first but remained in control of second place with a total 154.

The second-place finish is Teran’s third top-five finish this season and the seventh of her IJGT career.

Congratulations to Brett Inserra and Gabriela Teran on earning this week’s Player of the Week honors!
