Kedlaya, Benevento among junior to earn IJGT Player of the Week honors – Oct. 14, 2014

The IJGT traveled to Orlando, Fla., on October 11-12, 2014, to host the Florida Junior at The Palm Course at Walt Disney Resort. The hot and humid climate did not affect the 51 juniors as they produced low rounds on both days.

The Player of the Week honors for the Southeast Tour go to Trey Wren of Suffolk, Va., and Ankita Kedlaya of Bangalore, India.

On day one, Wren got off to a hot start by posting a birdie on his first hole and stringing together pars on six of his following seven holes before finishing the front nine with a score of 1-over-par.  His back nine went just as well, with pars on seven of the nine holes giving him a total round one score of 3-over 75.  Wren returned in round two with similar momentum and added par on the first seven consecutive holes leading up to a birdie on No. 8.  Wren’s final nine holes were played at one under par, including three birdies and four pars.  Wren took home the second place trophy with his final round score of 71 and an overall score of 146.

Kedlaya opened her first round with par on four front-nine holes before really heating up and carding par on eight of her back-nine holes to finish the day at 78. She continued sharp play in round two with six pars on the front nine, four of which were consecutive, before adding a birdie on No. 8. Kedlaya’s scores of 78 and 74 were her lowest scores to date on the IJGT with her round two 74 earning her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round for the girls. Kedlaya’s overall score of 152 helped her to finish second.

Thanks to outstanding play and their second place finishes, both Wren and Kedlaya qualified for the North American Junior Amateur Championship to be held in Arizona on December 31, 2014 – January 3, 2015. The Florida Junior at Disney Resort was a qualifying tournament, granting and invitation to  the top two boys and top two girls.

The IJGT’s Northeast Tour traveled to Bronx, N.Y., for the first-ever tournament at Pelham Bay Golf Club, to host The IJGT Junior Open. Despite some rain during round one and cold and windy conditions on both days, there was great golf performances the entire weekend. The IJGT is proud to award the Northeast Player of the Week honors to Mark Benevento of Somers Point, N.J., and Soona Lee-Tolley of New York, N.Y.

Benevento, having placed second in The Architects Cup on October 4-5, 2014, looked to come out and shoot for an even greater performance.  Benevento’s round one score of 75 left him two shots off of the lead.  Knowing he needed to play great golf in round two to assume the lead, Benevento improved his round by three strokes for a even-par 71. Despite missing the title by two strokes, Benevento said, “My goal for each round is make great shots and improve from the day before. I am happy with how round two went today.” His second-place finish at the IJGT Junior Open becomes his fourth top-five finish in as many events.

After round one, Lee-Tolley sat in third place but was eager for more. Returning for round two with a fire in her belly, Lee-Tolley used consistent putting for par to cut five strokes from her round one score. Her round two 78 also earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the girls. This allowed her to move up the leader board and into second place. With just one less par than winner Madison Braman, Lee-Tolley used 20 total pars to prove her determination and consistency, helping her to earn this week’s Player of the Week honors.

Congratulations to Wren, Kedlaya, Benevento and Lee-Tolley on earning the IJGT Player of the Week honors this week!
