Lowcountry Junior at Wexford Plantation – Post Event Recap

This weekend, Wexford Plantation in Hilton Head, SC hosted the IJGT Lowcountry Junior.

We kicked off the weekend on Friday with a Junior-Amateur competition with members from the Wexford and Long Cove communities to raise money for the Junior Champions Foundation and other local charities.

Competition began on Saturday at Wexford Plantation for our field of 53 junior golfers from all over the country. We were also able to have 6 players from the First Tee of the Lowcountry join the field for their inaugural IJGT events. The players all faced difficult conditions, with cold and wind dominating the day on both Saturday and Sunday. The competition was close across all divisions, with great performances across the field.

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Andrew Swanson of Bluffton, SC placed 3rd for the second time this season in his third IJGT event. Merlin Dohn, an IJGA student from Berlin, Germany took second place, shooting 85-84. This is Merlin’s best finish this season, topping his 4th place appearance at Oldfield in January.Shooting a pair of 79s, IJGA’s Matthew Pilgrim from West Vancouver, BC brought home the division. This is Matthew’s first win after having 8 Top-5s in his previous IJGT tournaments.

The top 3 spots in the Girls Division this weekend were dominated by IJGA Seniors, representing 3 different countries and committed to 3 Division I golf programs. Kayla Kozak, from Bluffton, SC and committed to play golf at UCF next fall, shot 74-81 to take 3rd place.

Angela Wang (Wint Phoo Nadi Aung) tied with Sera Tadokoro at +8 after two rounds to take the competition to a sudden death playoff. Angela was able to come out as the winner, but it was a great performance by everyone in the field.

BOYS 15-19

The Boys 15-19 Division saw a lot of drama and a shocking finish this weekend. As the day progressed, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped on the back nine creating some tough conditions for the players that had gone low on Saturday. Round 1 Leader Drew Salyers ended up placing 3rd, shooting 73-80. Jeremy Sisson, a JPGA Junior from Skaneatles, NY shot 77-76 to tie for the 3rd place spot.

Alan Smith (2018, Winchendon, MA) and 13 year old Jonathan Griz were both tied for the lead at +7 on Sunday afternoon, taking the competition to another sudden death playoff. The two players battled it out for 3 holes, but ultimately Jonathan showed he had the clutch gene- sinking a 15-footer to birdie 18 and win.
