WEST END, N.C. – The IJGT hosted the Major Championship at Dormie Club on November 8-9, 2014. The second Major Championship of the season featured a field of more than 50 juniors from across the United States and around the world. Facing cooler temperatures and a difficult course, juniors competed for IJGT merit points and national rankings as well as the honor of being named the IJGT Major Champion.

DSC06876cropShiso Go of Kanagawa, Japan, captured the title of Major Champion in the Boys 15-19 Division with scores of 77 and 71 for a two-day total of 148. Go started round two in a four-way tie for second place. After posting zero birdies in round one, Go improved by adding three birdies in the second round to his 23 total pars for the weekend. Go’s strong play on Sunday allowed him to move into first place and win by two strokes.

“My putting and short game are what I did really well with and what helped me win,” said Go.

Taisuke Ono of Tokyo, Japan, finished in second place with a two-day total of 150. Brett Inserra of Upper Saddle River, N.J., and Tennoshin Ogawa of Ichinomiya-shi, Japan, shared third place with a tournament totals of 151. Inserra’s round-two score of 2-under-par 69 earned him the Clazic Belt Low Final Round Award, the award given to the male and female junior(s) recording the lowest score on the final day of the event.

DSC06885cropThe Boys 14 & Under Division Champion was Thomas Pfoestl of Schenna, Italy. Pfoestl jumped out to a ten-stroke lead over the division in round one with his opening score of 79. Despite his second day struggles, Pfoestl maintained a ten-stroke lead with a second round of 83. With the help of three total birdies and 13 total pars, Pfoestl’s tournament total 162 earned him his first career IJGT win.

“I drove the ball well and I knew if I played smart in the final round I would win,” commented Pfoestl.

Luke Sample of New York, N.Y., finished in second with a tournament total of 172 while brother, Andrew Sample placed third with a two-day total of 198.

DSC06892cropKelly Whaley of Farmington, Conn., became the Major Champion of the Girls Division with an even-par 142. Whaley followed up her strong first round with a 2-over-par 73 in round two thanks to four additional birdies. Her second round 73 earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the girls.

Whaley said, “I’ve worked really hard lately on my game and it’s nice to see all of my hard work pay off.”

Finishing in second was Gabriela Teran of Managua, Nicaragua, with a tournament total of 154. Rounding out the top three was Lita Huber of Montevideo, Uruguay, with a total of 159.
