Major Championship at Presidio – Final Results (Feb. 8, 2015)

Ma wins Boys 14 & Under Division by seven strokes

Karren earns first IJGT victory

The International Junior Golf Tour  hosted the first west coast tournament of the spring season, the Major Championship at Presidio, on February 7-8, 2015. The second round of the event was cancelled due to inclement weather resulting in a shortened one-day, 18-hole event. Juniors competed for IJGT Merit Points and national rankings.

Drew KarrenDrew Karren of Orinda, Calif., made par on the entire back nine to finish with a 3-over 75, good enough to win the Boys 15-19 Division. The victory was Karren’s first on the International Junior Golf Tour.

In the win Karren also earned the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female junior to card the lowest score in the final round of the event.

“My first nine holes were a little iffy, but I was able to par every hole on the back to round out a solid score,” Karren said after the win. “I would have liked to play more golf, but I’m definitely satisfied with the win”

Devin Gregg of San Anselmo, Calif., and Louie Euer of Loomis, Calif., finished one stroke behind Karren with tournament totals of 76 to tie for second place.

Gregg found particular success on the par-4s; he birdied the par-4 fifth and 16th holes.

Euer made par or better on all of the par-3s including a birdie on the par-3 15th hole.

Brian Ma 1AMilpitas, Calif., native Brian Ma used three birdies on the back nine to cruise to victory in the Boys 14 & Under Division.

Ma opened the tournament by making par on the first three holes and never looked back. His tournament total of 76 paced the division by seven strokes.

“I played pretty well and it was nice playing with Angela [Bagabas], who shot a 74,” said Ma. “She pushed me to play better.”

Upland, Calif., native Mikee Ordona finished second in the Boys 14 & Under Division with a tournament total of 83. His lone birdie came on the par-4 eighth hole.

Angela Bagabas recorded the lowest score in the field, a 2-over 74 to win the Girls Division. She also earned the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the girls. Bagabas had an eight-hole par-or-better streak that lasted from the eighth hole through the 15th. She carded three birdies in the tournament on the par-4 first hole, the par-5 ninth and the par-5 18th.

“Yesterday’s round (round one) was really good with conditions, so I was able to play pretty well,” Bagabas said. “I think I could have scored lower but I’ll take a 74.”

The IJGT will continue tournament play on February 14-15, 2015 with the South Carolina Open at Kiawah Island. To sign up for this event, or others, visit www.IJGT.com or call (843) 686-1500.
