Metropolitan Junior at Forsgate CC – Final Results

Nicholas Finishes First at Forsgate
Pongrac earns first IJGT Title

MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) traveled to Forsgate Country Club to host the Metropolitan Junior on the third stop of the Northeast tour. IJGT Merit Points, AJGA Stars, and national rankings were at stake, as well as an invite to IJGT’s Bridgestone Tournament of Champions to be played at Grand Cypress Resort on May 24-26, 2014. The weather conditions made the already difficult Banks course even more challenging. Temperatures started out in the 50s and dropped into the 40s later in the day. Rain showers persisted for the duration of the round creating inclement weather that shortened the event to 18 holes.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, James Nicholas of Scarsdale, N.Y., finished in first place. Nicholas came into his first ever IJGT event determined and unaffected by the consistent rain showers as he carded a 2-over-par score of 38 on the front nine which included five pars and one birdie. The birdie came on the 528 yard par-5, hole No. 9. The birdie served as momentum for Nicholas as he followed the birdie with par at the next six holes. He totaled 13 pars on the day and one birdie to finish with a 3-over-par score 74 overall.

Jake Niedosik of Lansdale, Pa. took second place finishing with a 5-over-par score of 76, just two strokes behind Nicholas. James Wolfangel of Flemington, N.J., finished in third place with a 6-over-par score of 77 overall.

yejiIn the Girls Division, Yeji Shin of Norwood, N.J., finished in first place. Shin and Lindsay May of Auburn, N.Y., both finished tied for first with a score of 83. After a head-to-head scorecard playoff, Shin’s last nine-hole score of 44, played on holes 1 through 9, was enough to win the division. Coming off of a fourth-place finish in the Philly Challenge at White Manor, Shin came into the Metropolitan Junior looking to become a part of the winner’s circle. She started out strong making six pars on the back nine, five of them coming consecutively on holes 13 through 17. Shin posted scores of 44 and 39 totaling a 12-over-par score of 83.

After the scorecard playoff, May finished in second place with a score of 83. In third place was Summer Kitahara, of Greenwich, Conn., with a score of 86.

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Ryan Pongrac of Freehold, N.J., won his first IJGT championship. Pongrac’s best IJGT finish prior was at the South Jersey Open at Blue Heron Pines , where he finished in second place. Pongrac stayed focused and played his best golf to date to secure the first-place victory. Starting on the back nine, he carded five pars, with two of them coming on both of the par-3 holes. He started out his second nine with a par on hole number one. Pongrac earned five more pars on the front nine, including two pars on each of the par-5’s to close out his round. His 11 total pars helped him to solidify his victory. He finished with a final score of a 12-over-par 83. Pongrac’s 83 won his division by a total of five strokes.

There was a tie for second place in the Boys 14& Under Division between Joe Tammaro of West Islip, N.Y., and Drew Mullen Jr. from Walpole, Mass., both posting a score of 88.
