Oldfield Junior presented by Auntie Anne’s – Final Results

Pedro nabs second victory at Oldfield Golf Club

Rodriguez, McDowell win by ten strokes

OKATIE, S.C. – The IJGT hosted the Oldfield Junior presented by Auntie Anne’s at Oldfield Golf Club on April 12-13, 2014. The sponsored event was a two-day 36-hole tournament with junior participants ranging in age from 12-19 years old. Winners of the event were awarded IJGT Merit Points and also competed for national rankings and an invite to the IJGT’s Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions to be played at Grand Cypress Resort on May 24-26, 2014.

DSC_0226The Boys 15-19 Division was led both days by first-place finisher Toks Pedro of Bowie, Md. Finishing with a score of 71-72 – 143, Pedro’s 1-under-par overall score became his second first-place finish at Oldfield Golf Club in IJGT events, the first being in 2012. Pedro finished with par or better on 15 of 18 holes to put him out in front after round one. Five birdies were the highlight of his second round, putting him 1-under-par for the day.

The 1-under par 72 allowed Pedro to secure the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award offered to the player who shoots the lowest score during the final round. Pedro also led the division in total birdies with nine.

Pedro finished three strokes ahead of second-place finisher, Keshav Sharma of New Delhi, India, who posted a tournament score of 72-74 – 146 overall. The highlight of Sharma’s tournament came in his back nine of round two where he finished with par or better on all nine holes. In third place was Luigi D’Amico of Forli, Italy, with a score of 74-74 – 147 overall that featured seven birdies and an eagle on the 12th hole.

When asked what worked well for him, Pedro said, “[I was] hitting a lot of good shots and was hitting a lot of greens and two putts.”

DSCN7115 copyChandler McDowell of Springbrook, Canada, was the Boys 14 and Under Divisional winner with a two-day score of 72-71 – 143 overall. Leading his division statistically, McDowell’s six birdies lifted him to a staggering 10-stroke lead for the win. The 1-under-par 71 for round two also made McDowell a Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award winner. The first-place finish becomes McDowell’s third win in five events played in the 2013-2014 season.

Finishing in second was Chase Ingram of Bluffton, S.C., with a score of 77-76 – 153 overall. The second place finish is Ingram’s third consecutive top-10 finish this season. Takafumi Shimoji of Okinawa, Japan, rounded out the top three with an overall score of 157.

McDowell commented that his mindset to maintain his lead was to “play my own game and take advantage of the birdie-able holes on the course.”

In her first IJGT tournament of the 2014 DSCN7112 copyyear, Clementina Rodriguez of Caracas, Venezuela, finished first in the Girls Division. Her 69-74 – 143 overall score was highlighted by six total birdies and a hole-in-one on the par-3 third hole. Both scores from rounds one and two posted by Rodriguez were divisional lows, her round-one 69 being the lowest score of the tournament.

Kelly Whaley of Farmington, Conn., and Sera Tadokoro of Osaka, Japan, both finished 10 strokes behind Rodriguez tied for second with overall scores of 153. Both Whaley and Tadokoro posted par or better on 25 of 36 holes for the tournament. Sophie Guo (T4) of Bluffton, S.C., posted the only other hole-in-one on the par-3 13th hole.

When asked about her win, Rodriguez commented, “It feels great to be at a tournament, haven’t played an IJGT tournament yet this year so it feels great to win this tournament.”

The IJGT will head west next weekend for the Arizona Junior at Southern Dunes in Maricopa, Ariz. To sign up for this Event, click here.
