NORRISTOWN, Pa. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) stopped outside Philadelphia on Sept. 14-15, 2013 for the IJGT Philly Open at Jeffersonville Golf Club. The weather posed quite a challenge for the players during the first round as the wind made for some difficult approach shots. Though the weather was more cooperative during the final round, the Donald Ross designed Jeffersonville Golf Club still challenged the players with its small greens and well-positioned bunkers. Our Players of the Week for this week are Samantha Yao of Berwyn, Pa. and Nick Geiman of York, Pa.
Competing in her second IJGT Event of the season, Yao finished in second place this week after an exciting three-hole playoff. Coming off a seventh-place finish at the IJGT Labor Day Classic at Hershey, Yao battled the elements during the first round of the event to shoot an 84 and take a three-stroke lead in the Girls Division. During the final round, Yao fired an 85 to leave her tied for first place. After making a great up-and-down on the first hole of the playoff Yao went on to par the second playoff hole and then lipped out her par putt on the third hole. At just 12-years-old, Yao will be one to watch out for as she continues to fine-tune her game in the coming years.
It has been almost two years since Geiman was able to crack the top three at an IJGT Event. This past weekend Geiman posted an impressive final-round number to put him near the top of the leaderboard. The Donald Ross design proved to be a tough test for the entire field but Geiman put together a round of 73 in the final day to jump ahead of the pack and into a tie for second place. A 3-over-par round of five bogeys and two birdies was the low round of the tournament and claimed the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. With his first top three finish of the season, Geiman will take this momentum into his next tournament and hope to make another run for top three.
