Riva wins in playoff, Lees plays consistent to win the Girls Division.
Hershey, P.A.– The International Junior Golf Tour stayed up in the Northeast this past weekend for the Northeast Tour Championship at Hershey CC. This tournament had over 91 players in the field. The participants competed for AJGA Stars, National Rankings and IJGT Merit Points. The top five players in each division earned preferred entry into any IJGT Major Championship and the Champions of each division earned an invitation to the 2016 IJGT Tournament of Champions.
In the Girls Division, Kaitlyn Lees kept the first place lead. Lees, of Bryn Mawr, P.A., played very consistent this weekend shooting 81, 81, for a total of 162. Right behind Lees was Samantha Fritzinger. Fritzinger, of Allentown, P.A., also had a consistent weekend shooting 82,82 for a total of 164. Rounding out the Girls Division was Katie James, shooting a total of 166.
“I didn’t have my best game this weekend, I just tried to keep it together. The course here at Hershey is wonderful. A lot of my success came from my favorite club; my driver. I can always depend on it,” commented Lees.
In the Boys 14 and Under Division there were 11 players that competed. Taking the championship was Garrett Engle. Engle, from Harrisburg, P.A., had three birdies this weekend and came from behind to take the title. Engle shot a total of 159. Alex Gu and Brice Delaney tied in the Boys 14 and Under Division carding a total of 162.
“I played ok. I played much better on the back and had some clutch putts. The conditions were very tough. They had undulating greens and the wind was hard to play in,” said Engle.
In the Boys 15-19 Division, Richard Riva III finally prevailed after winning the playoff. Riva, of Lancaster, P.A., shot a total of 154, was tied for first after round one, and had to go up against Ben Pochet to claim the title. Ben Pochet, of Royersford, P.A., also shot a total of 154 but lost in the one-hole playoff when Riva made a par on the 10th hole. Wills Montgomery and Thomas McAuliffe tied for third place each shooting a total of 155.
“Conditions were tough this weekend. The winds were swirling which made it difficult. I had a new putter in the bag this week and it made a huge difference. It was my best club and I made a lot of putts,” remarked Riva. *Richard just committed to St. Joes in Philly
