South Carolina Open at Kiawah- Final Results (Feb. 15, 2015)

Gianchandani wins Girls Division by 19 strokes

Pfoestl earns second IJGT victory in a row

The International Junior Golf Tour traveled to Kiawah Island to host the South Carolina Open at Kiawah Island on February 14-15, 2015. In cold and windy conditions, juniors competed for IJGT Merit Points and national rankings during the two-day, 36-hole event. Round one was played on the Ocean Course. Round two began via shotgun start at the Turtle Point course.

Jason StokesJason Stokes of St. Brelade, Jersey, improved on his round one score by two strokes to shoot a division-best 4-over 76 in round two and win the Boys 15-19 Division.

Stokes started the tournament strong holing out from 100 yards for eagle on the first hole of the Ocean Course in round one. He carded a birdie on the par-4 15th on the Ocean Course and finished the round with a 6-over 78.

Consistency was key for Stokes in round two. “I was feeling good,” Stokes said after the tournament. “I just played steady, making pars.”

Although he scored better on Turtle Point, Stokes preferred the Ocean Course noting, “It was in good condition and I found the Ocean Course was tougher [than Turtle Point]. It was more scenic and a nice course.”

Stokes also earned the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female junior to card the lowest score in the final round of the event and finished with a tournament total 154.

Finishing in second behind Stokes was Shiso Go of Kanagawa, Japan, with a total of 158. In third was Jack Simpson of Aurora, Ontario, with a tournament total 161.

Ami GianchandaniIn the Girls Division, Ami Gianchandani of Short Hills, N.J., built off her two-stroke lead after round one to win the division by a decisive 19 strokes. Her round two 1-over 73 earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the girls.

Because round two began with a shotgun start, Gianchandani started the second day on hole No. 17. The highlight of the tournament for Gianchandani came on her last hole in round two. “My favorite hole was the 16th on Turtle Point,” she said following the tournament. “It was a narrow par-3. I hit my 9-iron short and then I sunk a 50-foot putt from off the green to make a birdie.”

The birdie on 16 was one of three Gianchandani carded on the back nine. Gianchandani also carded birdies on the par-5 13th hole and the difficult par-4 15th. She improved on her round one score by 14 strokes to finish with a total score of 160.

In second with a two-day total of 179 was Leslie Ginter of Lexington, Ky., and in third was Victoria Parker of Lewiston, N.Y., with a total of 181.

Thomas PfoestlThomas Pfoestl of Schenna, Italy, won his second IJGT tournament in a row after winning the Carolina Classic at Colleton River last month. Pfoestl led the Boys 14 & Under Division of the South Carolina Open by one stroke following round one, and won the tournament by six strokes. Pfoestl was most successful on par-5s in round two carding birdies on the par-5 10th and 13th holes.

“I was feeling good,” Pfoestl said after his victory. “It was cold, but I just tried not to give up.”

Pfoestl finished with consistent scores of 83 for a two-day total of 166. Behind him in second with a tournament total 172 was Jon Nolan Perry of Berwyn, Pa. Rounding out the top three was Jake Calamaro of Newtown Square, Pa., with a total score of 176.

The IJGT will continue tournament play on February 21-22, 2015, with the Georgia Junior at Savannah Harbor. To sign up for this event, or others, visit www.IJGT.com or call (843) 686-1500.
