IJGT Island Open at Palmetto Hall – Final Results (Nov. 2, 2014)

Koguchi nabs first IJGT win at Palmetto Hall
Tadokoro earns first victory of the season and third career IJGT win

The IJGT hosted the IJGT Island Open at Palmetto Hall on the plantation’s Arthur Hills Course on November 1-2, 2014. Cold temperatures and heavy winds greeted juniors for the opening round before conditions improved for round two. Juniors from various states and countries competed for IJGT merit points and national rankings.

DSC_1398cWataru Koguchi of Fotouka, Japan, finished first in the Boys 15-19 Division by combining scores of 78 and 73 for a two-day total of 151. With consistent scoring in both rounds, Koguchi carded five total birdies and 21 total pars for his tournament. Koguchi entered the final round three strokes back of then leader, Brett Krekorian of Andover, Mass. His final-round 73 tied for the lowest final-round score of the division, allowing him to move into first and win by three strokes. The second-round 73 also earned Koguchi a share of the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female junior(s) with the lowest score in the final round of the tournament.

In second place was Santiago Diaz of Merida, Mexico, with a two-day total of 154. Sharing third place was Krekorian and Aaron Terrazas of Veracruz, Mexico, both carding a tournament total 155.

Rowan Foxley of Arlington, Wash., also earned the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award by matching Koguchi’s second-round 73.

DSC_1556cIn the Boys 14 & Under Division, Mikus Ming of Smiths, Bermuda, was victorious. After posting a round-one score of 87 and sitting in second behind then leader Arthur Draijer of Sandweiler, Luxembourg, Ming posted the low final round of his division, an 89, to move into first and capture the title. Using his 5-iron to sink a hole-in-one on the 160-yard par-3 No. 6 was the highlight of Ming’s first round. He also added 13 pars and a birdie to his performance.

In second was Draijer with a total 178 and rounding out the top-three was Aiden McCloskey of Northboro, Mass., with a tournament total 183.

DSC_1591cFinishing first in the Girls Division was Sera Tadakoro of Osaka, Japan. Tadokoro carded scores of 84 and 72 for a two-round total of 156.  Tadakoro was in a tie for second after the first round behind then leader Samantha Huang of Shenzhen, China, before returning for round two and shaving an impressive 12 strokes from her round one score to move into first. With the help of 11 pars and four birdies, Tadokoro’s second round, even-par 72 was tied for the lowest score of the tournament. She earned one of two Clazic Belts Low Final Round Awards for the girls, the second going to Sophie Guo of Bluffton, S.C., who also scored an even-par 72.

In second was Huang with a total 157 and Guo finished third with a two-day total 166.

Georgia Open at Savannah Quarters – Final results (Oct. 19, 2014)

Boys 14 & Under and Girls Division end in come-from-behind wins
Krekorian nabs his first victory in IJGT

The IJGT’s Southeast Tour headed to Savannah for the Georgia Open at Savannah Quarters on October 18-19, 2014. The two-day 36 holes tournament featured a field of more than 80 juniors from around the world competing for national rankings and IJGT merit points.

10636682_10154792846365026_7334357170016159650_o copyIn a come-from-behind effort, Brett Krekorian of Andover, Mass., broke free from a multi-person tie to move into first for the win at the Georgia Open. With a four-stroke deficit, Krekorian made up ground with the help of five second-round birdies and 10 pars. Krekorian comes off of a tie for 18th place in the IJGT Lowcountry Open at Oldfield Golf Club in his first-ever IJGT event. His final-round 2-under 70 earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female junior with the lowest final round score of the tournament. Krekorian finished with scores of 75 and 70 to combine for a tournament total 145.

“I knew that if I could not make big numbers and make a few birdies and continue with pars, I could probably end up winning eventually,” said Krekorian.

Sharing second was Mark Goodall of Livingston, Scotland, and Nick Russell of Hilton Head Island, S.C., both finishing with two-day totals of 149.

10481505_10154792845720026_444006067422180561_o copyIn the Boys 14 & Under Division, Brandon McBride of Bluffton, S.C., was victorious. McBride shared the divisional lead with Thomas Pfoestl of Schenna, Italy, at the conclusion of round one before he turned on the heat. McBride made a run for the win with the help of 12 pars and two birdies to improve his round-one score by three. The win is the first of McBride’s career as well as his lowest tournament score (151) of his career.

“I put myself in good positions today, especially with the irons, and stayed patient all day,” said McBride.

In second was Pfoestl with a two-day total 166 while Arthur Drajer of Sandweiler, Luxembourg, finished in third with a total 180.

1617685_10154792845030026_3644729699337966755_o copyAlso in a come-from-behind fashion, Isidora Quevedo of Santiago, Chile, won the Girls Division. Trailing by three strokes at the end of round one, Quevedo used a stellar back-nine in round two to move into first. With a 12-hole par-or-better streak on holes 7 through 18, Quevedo recorded a final-round score of 74 to not only make up the deficit but also move into the lead by one.

“I did the same thing as yesterday and just tried to hit as many greens as possible. I played smart; I hit fairways, hit greens – as many greens as possible – and that was the main thing. I made some important putts for par, too,” said Quevedo.

In second was round-one leader Clementina Rodriguez of Caracas, Venezula, with a total 147. Rounding out the top three was Mind Puangcharoen of Chonburi, Thailand, with scores of 79 and 71 to combine for a total 150. Puangcharoen’s 1-under 71 in round two earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the girls.
