Summer Series at Olde Stonewall – Final Results

Coulter captures crown in comeback fashion at Olde Stonewall

Lewis earns first IJGT title in Girls Division

ELLWOOD CITY, PA. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) kicked off its Summer Series tournaments at Olde Stonewall Golf Club in Ellwood City, Pa.  30 junior golfers competed for IJGT Merit Points, AJGA Performance Stars, and national rankings during this two-day, 36-hole event.

Knox Coulter of Oakmont, Pa., put together a fantastic second round to come from behind and secure his first IJGT victory. After shooting a first-round 79, the rising junior put together a final-round 3-over 73, which included an eagle on the par-5, ninth hole. His second round included a birdie on the tough 17th hole at Olde Stonewall Golf Club, which all but sealed the deal for Coulter who won by one stroke over Max Hoffman of Pittsburgh, Pa.

When asked about his mindset going into today, Coulter stated, “I wanted to come out here today and hit fairways, and that is what I did.”

Coulter final-round score of 73 also earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, which goes to the player who records the lowest final-round score in the tournament.

Hoffman made birdie on the last hole during the final round and finished in second place with a tournament total of 153. There was a two-way tie for third place between Will McMahon of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Carter Ehms of Cranberry Township, Pa., who both shot a two day total of 154.

Christina Lewis of Wexford, Pa., secured her first IJGT tournament victory in the Girls Division, with a two day total 168. Despite the wet conditions on the first day, Lewis managed a round-one score of 81 to give her the lead. Her first round included a birdie on the difficult par-3, 14th hole. Lewis was able to maintain her lead in the final round despite having an average day on the course.

Fox started his first round off with an impressive two under 34 on the front nine, which included three birdies and five pars. Fox picked up right where he left off for round two, by shooting a second-round 4-over 74, giving him a seven-stroke victory.

IJGT celebrates the NCAA’s Early Signing Period with an IJGT Photo of the Week

November 12-19, 2014, served as the NCAA’s early signing period. For many IJGT juniors, the week-long period meant the lengthy search for the college of the future was over. More than 20 juniors playing on the IJGT put on their new school colors, pulled out their finest pens and made their commitments by signing their National Letters of Intent (NLI).

“A binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution,” the NLI establishes a student-athlete’s intent to attend a particular university and to participate in a given sport.

Those IJGT members who participated in the early signing:

Bunyaporn “Nat” Zeng University of Wisconsin
Connor McKay Lipscomb University
Masato Yoshitsugu Hawai’i Pacific University
TJ Kaczan California State University – Bakersfield
J.D. Moore St. Peters University
Aaron Terrazas Oklahoma University
Isidora Nilsson University of South Carolina
Min Yi “Samantha” Huang University of North Texas
Cara Basso Penn State University
Will Hicks Erskine College
Chomchana “Cake” Phuchanbanchob California State University – Northridge
Yeji Shin Georgia Southern University
Will Miles University of South Carolina
Rachel Corry University of Virginia
Kelly Whaley University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill
Thomas Avant Drake University

Derrick Villarreal Charleston Southern University
Carter Ehms Cedarville University
Ryan Rose – Rutgers University
Tyler Dierwechter Stetson University
Clementina Rodriguez University of Washington
Keshav Sharma Erskine University
Kasidy Beckel Radford University
Emily Mills – Rutgers University

To celebrate our juniors, we shared photos of each junior as he or she proudly signed the National Letter of Intent. Chomchana “Cake” Phuchanbanchob and her coach, Richard Wedzik, are featured in this week’s special edition of the Photo of the Week.

Phuchanbanchob signed to play golf with California State University – Northridge. Having played in 35 IJGT events, Phuchanbanchob carries a scoring average of 77.475, has accumulated 115 birdies and has placed in the top-10 in all but two of her events.

Check out photos from each junior’s signing on our IJGT Facebook page here.

Don’t forget – each week we have a Photo of the Week and it could be you! Be sure to check the IJGT Facebook after each event. Like, share and comment on your favorite photos and based on the point system below, the photo with the most points will then be featured as that week’s Photo of the Week!

Summer Series at Olde Stonewall – Final Results

Barto, Walsh win with large margin
Tanabe secures first IJGT victory

The IJGT continued its Summer Series at Olde Stonewall just outside of Pittsburgh, Pa., on July 7-8, 2014. The two-day, 36-hole event featured a field of 50 juniors competing for national rankings.

BartoIn the Boys 15-19 Division, Matt Barto of Leechburg, Pa. won the division convincingly by eight strokes. Finishing his first round front nine with a birdie on the par-5 No. 9, Barto carded a 1-under-par 35 score to kick off his round. He finished round one with an even-par score of 71 to assume the lead before heading into round two. Barto carded par or better on 13 of 18 holes in round two, including two birdies en route to his victory.

“I wanted to try and shoot under par today,” said Barto and despite finishing 3-over-par, he remained victorious.

Barto finished with scores of 71-74 – 145. Barto’s round two score of 74 tied for the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award given to the male and female with the lowest score of the final round. Benjamin Morgret of Venetia, Pa., was also a Clazic Belts winner.

Second place was a three-way-tie between Pennsylvania natives Nicklaus Cuny of Cranberry Township, Michael Reed-Price of Dresher and Carter Ehms of Cranberry Township. The trio finished with overall scores of 153.

TanabeThe Boys 14 & Under Division was won by Chris Tanabe of Sewickley, Pa., who finished with scores of 84-82 – 166. Tanabe took first by a staggering 14 strokes to secure his first IJGT victory. Ten second round pars helped Tanabe to shave two strokes from his first round score and led him to card a total of 16 pars for the tournament.

“My driver has really been working for me and I have been hitting a lot of fairways,” said Tanabe on his performance.

In second place, Palmer Cuny of Cranberry Township, Pa., who carded consistent 90s in rounds one and two to finish with a two-day score of 180. Rounding out the top three for the division was Alex Beall of Pittsburgh, Pa., who recorded an overall score of 211.

WalshIn the Girls Division, a come-from-behind performance by Katie Walsh of Baldwinsville, N.Y., led to victory. Walsh used 12 pars to cut three strokes from her round one score of 81 to slide into first. The win comes as Walsh’s first IJGT victory. After trailing in at the conclusion of round one, Walsh made up ground to finish eight strokes ahead of her competition.

“I am a really good putter and was hitting putts both day. I can strike the ball but putting is my strength,” said Walsh. Her round-two score of 79 was the lowest score of the Girls Division, awarding her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Finishing in a tie for second was round-one leader Synclaire Kuhn of McMurray, Pa., and Marah Penn of Hamburg, N.Y., who both finished with a two-day score of 168.

The IJGT’s next event will be the Summer Series at Oyster Reef Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C., on July 11-12, 2014. To sign up for events, visit ijgt.com or call (843) 785-2444.
