IJGT Alumni Update – November 4, 2015

IJGT alumni competing in college golf have been finishing their Fall 2015 season strongly. Here are top 10 IJGT alumni finishers from the last week of collegiate competition:

The PGA Tour’s stop this week was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Five IJGT alumni competed in the CIMB Classic held at Kuala Lumpur G&CC (October 29 – November 1). Here is how they finished:

Throughout the month of September and thus far in October, IJGT alumni have been successful in their college golf tournaments. Here are some top-alumni finishers for the month of September and the first two weeks of October in their respective tournaments. In total there were 96 top-10 finishes and 11 tournament champions!

IJGT alumnus, Derek Bard, finishes runner-up at U.S. Amateur

Derek Bard of New Hartford, N.Y., a former IJGT player, shined at Olympia Fields Country Club in the 2015 U.S. Amateur. Playing in one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in world in a field of 312 players, Bard was able to put himself in elite company and finished runner-up in the national amateur championship conducted by the United States Golf Association.

After 36 holes of stroke play, the field was cut to 64 players for the match play portion of the competition. Bard drew Davis Riley of Hattiesburg, Miss., in the first round and won the match 4 & 3. In the Round of 32, Bard played Sepp Straka of Valdosta, Ga., and won the match 6 & 5. During the Round of 16, Bard played with U.S. Walker Cup team member, Hunter Stewart of Lexington, Ky., winning a tough match 2 up.

The University of Virginia Cavalier junior had his quarterfinal match against Jon Rahm of Spain, who led 3-up after the first ten holes, but Bard was able to complete the comeback and win the match 1 up advancing to the semifinals. To make it into the final round, Bard was victorious 3 up over Kenta Konishi of Japan.

Heading into the finals match of the U.S Amateur, Bard went head-to-head against Southern Methodist University senior Bryson DeChambeau. DeChambeau, the 2015 NCAA Champion, defeated Derek Bard 7 & 6 in the 36-hole final.  With their performances, DeChambeau and Bard earned spots in the 2016 Masters and U.S. Open.

Derek Bard was a star when playing on the International Junior Golf Tour. Bard carded six top-five finishes and won three tournaments in his three seasons with the tour. His titles include: 2009 Hank Haney Invitational at Sea Pines Resort, 2009 at Gillette Ridge, and 2010 at Bulle Rock.

48 past or current IJGT members are slated to play in the U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill. The national tournament conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA) begins on Monday, August 17, 2015 with a field of 312 players from across the world competing for the most prestigious amateur title in men’s golf. The championship is 36 holes of stroke play, with the top 64 players advancing to match play. Here are a list of the 48 past or current IJGT members.

IJGT ELITE to compete in NCAA National Championship

After competing in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regionals last week, many members of the IJGT ELITE have advanced to the Championship! The top five teams and individual from each of the six regional sites will compete in the finals, which will be held at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., on May 29-June 3, 2015. The IJGT ELITE who secured playoff berths are listed below.

The Sagamore Club — Noblesville, Indiana — Hosted by Ball State University

Brian Campbell (Illinois) earned medalist honors at the Noblesville Regional to lead the Illini to their eighth consecutive NCAA National Championship. He shot a 7-under 65 in the third round to finish with a 10-under tournament total. To read more about the win, click here.

Jonathan Garrick (UCLA) finished third in the Noblesville Regional with a 6-under tournament total to help lead the Bruins to a fourth-place finish and secure their 13th straight NCAA Championship berth.

University of North Carolina Finley Golf Course — Chapel Hill, North Carolina — Hosted by UNC

Billy Kennerly (Clemson) finished ninth in the Chapel Hill Regional with a 213 tournament total to help the Tigers advance. Fun Fact: All five Clemson players shot par or better on Saturday. The last time a Clemson team did that in a regional was May 17, 2001. To read more, click here.

J.T. Poston (Western Carolina) advanced as an individual.

The Farms Golf Club — Rancho Santa Fe, California — Hosted by University of San Diego

Max Rottluff and Alberto Sanchez, both of Arizona State, helped the Sun Devils capture an NCAA Championship berth with a second-place finish.

Derek Bard (Virginia) and the Cavaliers eked out a fifth-place finish at the Rancho Sante Fe Regional to head to the championship.

The Rawls Course — Lubbock, Texas — Hosted by Texas Tech University

Beau Hossler (Texas) and the Longhorns won the Lubbock Regional to punch their ticket to the championship. Hossler tied for fourth with a 5-under 208 tournament total. He hasn’t finished outside the top 20 this year.

Ben Schlottman (Auburn) and the Tigers finished fourth in the Lubbock Regional to advance to the championship.

The Course at Yale — New Haven, Connecticut — Hosted by Yale University

The University of South Florida Bulls were the only team to finish under par in the New Haven Regional, recording a 14-under tournament total. Rigel Fernandes carded a team-low 6-under 64 in round one on the way to a tie for 11th. Trey Valentine shot under par in the second and third rounds to land in a tie for 25th. Ryann Ree (San Diego State) carded a 3-under 67 in the final round of the New Haven Regional to help the Aztecs finish second and earn their third NCAA Championship berth in five years.

Theo Humphrey (Vanderbilt) and the Commodores punched their second consecutive ticket to the NCAA Championship with a fourth-place finish in the New Haven Regional.

Zach Wright (Louisiana State) and the Tigers came from behind to finish fifth in the New Haven Regional and earn a spot in the NCAA Championship. Wright shot a 1-under 69 in the final round helping his team to card a tournament-low team score of 12-under 268.

Hosted by the University of South Florida, the 2015 Division I Men’s Golf Championships will use a 72-hole, individual stroke-play format on Friday-Monday. Then, the top eight teams will compete in a team match-play tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday. Golf Channel will have live coverage of the event on June 1-3.

IJGT ELITE: Fowler wins The Players Championship

IJGT alum Rickie Fowler has been the talk of the golf world since winning The Players Championship via sudden-death playoff on Sunday. Fowler was 1-over through 12 holes in the final round before shooting 6-under on the final six holes. He became the first player ever to shoot 5-under (he made three birdies and an eagle) on the final four holes at The Players. Seven players have finished the stretch 4-under. Fowler also became the first player to birdie hole No. 17 three times in one day. Fowler’s mom, sister and girlfriend were all in attendance to watch his Mother’s Day win. Read more about it here.

Shanshan Feng won the Ladies European Tour’s Buick Championship in Shanghai, posting a 17-under 271 tournament total at Shanghai Qizhong Garden Golf Club. Read more about her victory here.

Derek Bard (Virginia) was named to the All-ACC team. He won the U.S. Collegiate title in October and ranks eighth in the ACC in stroke average (70.91).

Brynn Walker, who finished second in April’s Architects Cup, and Madelein Herr advanced to the USGA Women’s Four-Ball semifinals.

Matt Barto (Gannon) will be competing as an individual in the NCAA DII Men’s Golf Championships. He will play in the Atlantic/East regional at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, hosted by the Mountain East Conference.

Four IJGT members carded holes-in-one over the past two weeks, three in IJGT tournaments! Tom McLaughlin and Matthew Dzialga both had aces during last weekend’s IJGA Junior Open at Hershey Country Club. McLaughlin’s came on the par-3 16th hole and Dzialga’s came on the par-3 second hole. Betty Horaney carded a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth hole at Golden Bear during the previous weekend’s Junior World Qualifier. Earlier this week, Peter Bradbeer made a hole-in-one during practice while preparing for the Friends School League Championship.

Members of the IJGT ELITE competed in tournaments across the country over the past week. Three IJGT alums–Karen Chung, Kyung Kim and Annie Park–who are now members of the University of Southern California’s women’s golf team, helped lead the Trojans to victory in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. Chung made par or better on every hole in round one on her way to a 5-under 67. Meanwhile, in Primm, Nev., Carl Jonson carded a 15-under 201 in the Jackrabbit Invitational, good for third place. Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters — Las Vegas, NV — March 9-11, 2015

Beau Hossler (Texas) tied for second with a 9-under 207 tournament total. He carded 4-under 68s in the second and third rounds.

Chaminade Spring Tri Match — Wahiawa, HI — March 12, 2015

James Coon (Hawaii at Hilo) finished second with an even-par 144 tournament total to help lead his team to victory.

Coastal GA vs. Swarthmore — St. Simons Island, GA — March 12, 2015

Andrew Park (Swarthmore) finished sixth with an 8-over 152 tournament total.

Bandon Dunes Championship — Bandon, OR — March 13-14, 2015

David Kostyal II (UNCW) tied for third with a 3-under 141 tournament total.

St. James Plantation Invite — Southport, NC — March 13-14, 2015

Matt Barto (Gannon) won with a 5-over 149 tournament total. Shot the lowest score of the day on Saturday, a 1-under 71.

Ryan Fogel (West Chester) finished second with a 9-over 153 tournament total.

Kenneth Sames (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) tied third with a 10-over 154.

Conor Gilbert (Millersville) tied for third with a 10-over 154.

Joe Petrin (Le Moyne) tied for eighth with a 13-over 157.

Seminole Intercollegiate — Tallahassee, FL — March 13-15, 2015

Anthony Alex (Florida State) tied for fourth with a 9-under 207.

Derek Bard (Virginia) finished seventh with a 7-under 209.

Trey Rule (Mercer) tied for ninth with a 5-under 211.

Chris Petefish (Georgia Tech) tied for ninth with a 5-under 211.

University of Notre Dame Clover Cup — Mesa, AZ — March 13-15, 2015

Jordan Chael (Nebraska) tied for fifth with a 5-over 221 tournament total.

Cape Fear National Men’s Intercollegiate — Leland, NC — March 15-16, 2015

Matthew Yun (Nyack College) tied for second with a 3-over 219 tournament total. He carded three consecutive birdies on holes No. 10-12 in round three.

Kieran Purcell (Delaware) tied for sixth with a 5-over 221 tournament total. He made par or better on the entire front nine in round two.

Talis Park Challenge — Naples, FL — March 15-16, 2015

Theo Humphrey (Vanderbilt) tied for 10th with a 2-under 211. He carded back-to-back birdies in all three rounds.

Sacramento State Invitational — Roseville, CA — March 16-17, 2015

Astha Madan (Sacramento State) tied for fourth with a 12-over 228 tournament total. She made par or better on holes No. 8 through 18 in round three.

Alexa Schendelman (Montana) tied for fourth with a 12-over 228 tournament total.

Jackrabbit Invitational (Women’s) — Primm, NV — March 16-17, 2015

Sydney MacDonald (South Dakota State) tied for seventh with a 3-over 219 tournament total. She made par or better on holes No. 1 through 15 in round one and carded back-to-back birdies twice in round two.

Jackrabbit Invitational (Men’s) — Primm, NV — March 16-17, 2015

Carl Jonson (UNLV) finished third with a 15-under 201 tournament total. He shot in the 60s in all three rounds including two 6-under 66s. Jonson finished round one with three consecutive birdies on holes No. 16 through 18. He made par or better on holes No. 8 through 18 in round two and holes No. 1 through 14 in round three.

Arizona Wildcat Invitational — Tucson, AZ — March 16-17, 2015

Karen Chung (Southern California) won with an 11-under 205 tournament total to lead the Trojans to victory. She made par or better on every hole in round one on her way to a 5-under 67 and carded back-to-back birdies in all three rounds.

Kyung Kim (Southern California) finished fourth with an 8-under 208. She made par or better one holes No. 1 through 11 in round two.

Annie Park (Southern California) tied for fifth with a 6-under 210. She made par or better on holes No. 1 through 10 in round two.
