Jeremy Sisson takes the title after leading Day 1

Lee credits her chipping to a stellar finish.

Hilton Head Island, SC – The International Junior Golf Tour dodged tropical storm Julie and had scorching temps this weekend at the Island Invitational. The tournament had 50 participants that battled this weekend. The top five players in each division earned preferred entry into any IJGT Major Championship and the Champions of each division earned an invitation to the 2016 IJGT Tournament of Champions. AJGA Stars were also award in the Boys 15-19 Division

The Boys 15-19 Division Champion winner, Jeremy Sisson, claimed first place with a total of 145 for the tournament. Sisson, from Skaneatles, N.Y., competed in his first IJGT tournament over the weekend and kept his first place lead both days. Sisson, after just having his appendix taken out, carded three birides. Conor Bryne, claimed second place, after having a comeback second round shooting 71. Bryne, from Dublin, Ireland, had a total of 147 for the tournament. Rounding out the Boys 15-19 Division was Lino Galdin, shooting 76, 73, for a total of 149.

“It’s my first IJGT event, I enjoyed it! On day one I was inside twenty feet for every putt and was making pars. Today I was chunking my irons, my chipping saved me, getting inside three feet and making the putt.  The course was short, which hitting it straight gave you great reward. I just had my appendix taken out and just started playing two weeks ago, it felt great to get back out there,” remarked Sisson.

In the Girls Division, there were two that finished the tournament. Tracy Lee, of Seoul, South Korea, had a strong weekend shooting 74, 76, for a total of 150. Lee, coming off from a win from a previous tournament, showed strong iron play with 2 birides for her rounds. Taking second place was Yuna Sato of Fukushima, Japan. Sato was able to battle back after her round one score of 85, to shoot an impressive 74 on the last day.

“My round went good. My short game was pretty strong, anything under 30 yards I was able to get it up and down. On hole eight I stuck it less than a foot and had a tap in for birdie, my only birdie in the final round, I was very excited. The course was challenging because you had to be straight off the tee. I feel great going into this season, I can tell I’m improving.,” said Lee.

There were six players in the Boys 14 and Under Divison. Round one, Julian Sanchez-Garcia and Bryan Kim were tied; ultimately it came down to the last hole where Garcia beat Kim by one stroke. Garcia, from Xalapa, Mexico, had a consistent round of 77, 77. Kim shot one stroke better in his final round for a total of 155. Taking third place was AJ Gilpin, shooting 157.

Finals results from the Island Open at Dolphin Head Golf Club

Bai brings best in final round

Eddy wins first IJGT championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) stopped at Dolphin Head Golf Club this past weekend to host the Island Open. There were scattered rain showers during round one and a 30-minute fog delay to start the final round, but it turned out to be a great weekend with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Junior golfers ranging in age from 13-19 years old and representing 15 different countries competed for IJGT Merit Points along with National Rankings. Furthermore, the champion from each division received an invite to IJGT’s Bridgestone Tournament of Champions to be played at Grand Cypress Resort on May 24-26, 2014.

BAI_HeadshotIn the Boys 15-19 Division, Zhengkai Bai of Shantou, China, earned the win with his play during the final round. Bai made a statement in just his second IJGT event. He totaled 12 birdies through 36 holes and played very consistently. To close out his first round, Bai gained momentum by making birdie on four of the last five holes to close with a 2-over-par 74. In the final round, he shot an even-par 36 on the front nine, closing out the last five holes with five consecutive pars. The back nine is where Bai asserted his dominance and caught his groove. After three holes, he was 1-under-par. He then went on to make three birdies in a row on holes Nos. 13, 14, and 15. Bai posted a final-round score of 3-under-par 69 giving him his first IJGT championship. Bai’s 3-under-par 69 during the final round earned himself the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award. This award goes to the player who shoots the lowest score during the final round. It was also the low round of the tournament across all divisions.

When asked what was working well for him and if he set any personal goals, Bai responded, “My 3-wood and my driver was good, my putter was good…It all felt pretty good. [I had no personal goals], I just wanted to win.”
Second place went to Geuntae Kim, of Daegu, South Korea. Kim posted scores of 77-71—148. Third place was earned by Luigi D’Amico of Forli, Italy. D’Amico shot 76-75—151.

Eddy_HEADSHOTThe Girls Division was won by Anna Eddy of Hilton Head Island, S.C., earning her first IJGT championship. Eddy seemed to struggle a bit during round one. She made bogey on five consecutive holes, but bounced right back. She finished round one shooting 1-under-par on the last six holes. This momentum carried into her final round. She got off to a great start making the turn in 1-under-par 35. She added a birdie on hole No. 1 to increase her lead over her fellow competitors. Eddy was able to hold on down the stretch to secure her victory. Eddy posted scores of 77-74—151. Eddy’s score of 74 during the final round tied Milleina Ohara from Meguro-Ku, Japan, which earned them both the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

When asked how she was feeling after winning her first IJGT event, Eddy said, “It’s awesome! I have struggled with tournaments in the past and trying to get to the top, but I was finally able to pull through this weekend.”
Eddy was also asked what changed about her game between rounds, she stated, “[I managed] to stay patient and take it one shot at a time.” [/column]

Samantha Huang of Shenzhen, China, recorded a 76-76—152 tournament total to earn herself second place. Third place was won by Bria’ Sanders of Cordova, Tenn. who posted scores of 76-79—155.

Tupamahu_headshotIn the Boys 14 & under Division, Christian Clemence Tupamahu of Manado, Indonesia, played excellent golf throughout the whole tournament. Tupamahu’s play was very steady. He has finished within the top five in all five of his IJGT events this season, most notably taking third place at the Carolina Classic at Colleton River Plantation. After taking eighth place at Dolphin Head last year, Tupamahu came back this year to make a statement. He had a two-stroke lead after round one and never looked back. In the final round, he made 11 pars, which helped to cushion his lead. Eventually, he went on to win the Boys 14 & Under Division by six strokes. Tupamahu’s scores for the weekend were 87-79—166.

When asked who helped him on the road to victory and who he would like to thank, Tupamahu replied, “I would like to thank my sister who gave me full support and watched me when I was playing. Also, I want to say thank you to my coach, [his help] has been significant to me because he helps me check everything, [including] my swing.”

Alex Thaller of Hilton Head Island, S.C., came in second place, shooting an 89-86—175 overall. Alexander Camberos of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, finished in third place posting a 91-97—188.
