IJGT Alumni Power USC to East Lake Cup

Three IJGT Alumni powered No. 3 ranked University of Southern California to a victory at the East Lake Cup, held at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. Robyn Ree, Karen Chung, and Kyung Kim all helped in leading the Trojans to victory.

Day two featured match play between the Trojans and the Duke Bluedevils. Karen Chung beat Celine Boutier 4&2, winning four of the final five holes to clinch the point for the Trojans. Kyung Kim and Gurbani Singh were all square making the turn, but Kim was able to win 3 straight holes and held on to win 2 up on 17. Robyn Ree fell to Duke’s Virginia Elena Carter 2&1. Ree was 3 down on 14 and go it to 1 down after 16 but lost 17 to lose the match.

Jonathon Hardee of Alabama finished T4 at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational held at Makai Golf Club at Princeville (November 2-4)

This week was filled with NCAA conference championships, dramatic playoffs and exciting accolades for members of the IJGT ELITE.

Senior Trey Valentine and sophomore Rigel Fernandes helped the University of South Florida Bulls capture the 2015 American Athletic Conference crown. Valentine tied for third with a 7-under 209 tournament total. It was the team’s second conference championship in the past three seasons.

Freshman Chris Petefish counted in all three rounds of the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship, helping the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets win their 16th ACC golf crown.

The NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regional Championships selections were announced live via the Golf Channel on Monday. Ana Ruiz (Oklahoma) and Erynne Lee (UCLA) found out their teams will be competing in the San Antonio regional in Texas. Karen Chung, Kyung Kim and Annie Park (all of USC) found out the Trojans will be competing in the St. George Regional in Utah. To view all of the selections, click here. Best of luck to all the IJGT alums competing in the four regional tournaments on May 7-9. These tournaments will determine the championship field. The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional Championships selections will be announced live on the Golf Channel on Monday, May 4 at 10 a.m. ET.

Junior Pat Sanchez (Marquette) earned medalist honors at the Big East Men’s Golf Championship by carding a 1-under 215 tournament total. He fired a 3-under 69 in the final round of the event.

Temple University junior Brandon Matthews was named a PNC Bank Student-Athlete of the Year.

Sophomore Katie Rice and the women’s golf team earned the Team Academic Award at Morehead State for compiling a 3.72 team GPA in the fall.

And, on the LPGA Tour, Morgan Pressel carded an 8-under 280 tournament total to force a playoff in the Swinging Skirts Classic. She ended up finishing second. “I had plenty of chances out there today, so I can’t be too disappointed. I gave it my all,” Pressel said after the tournament.

Members of the IJGT ELITE competed in tournaments across the country over the past week. Three IJGT alums–Karen Chung, Kyung Kim and Annie Park–who are now members of the University of Southern California’s women’s golf team, helped lead the Trojans to victory in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. Chung made par or better on every hole in round one on her way to a 5-under 67. Meanwhile, in Primm, Nev., Carl Jonson carded a 15-under 201 in the Jackrabbit Invitational, good for third place. And, in Southport, N.C., Matt Barto came out of the gate hot winning his first tournament of the spring season, the St. James Plantation Invite. Below are some highlights from the IJGT ELITE’s performances this past week:

Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters — Las Vegas, NV — March 9-11, 2015

Beau Hossler (Texas) tied for second with a 9-under 207 tournament total. He carded 4-under 68s in the second and third rounds.

Chaminade Spring Tri Match — Wahiawa, HI — March 12, 2015

James Coon (Hawaii at Hilo) finished second with an even-par 144 tournament total to help lead his team to victory.

Coastal GA vs. Swarthmore — St. Simons Island, GA — March 12, 2015

Andrew Park (Swarthmore) finished sixth with an 8-over 152 tournament total.

Bandon Dunes Championship — Bandon, OR — March 13-14, 2015

David Kostyal II (UNCW) tied for third with a 3-under 141 tournament total.

St. James Plantation Invite — Southport, NC — March 13-14, 2015

Matt Barto (Gannon) won with a 5-over 149 tournament total. Shot the lowest score of the day on Saturday, a 1-under 71.

Ryan Fogel (West Chester) finished second with a 9-over 153 tournament total.

Kenneth Sames (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) tied third with a 10-over 154.

Conor Gilbert (Millersville) tied for third with a 10-over 154.

Joe Petrin (Le Moyne) tied for eighth with a 13-over 157.

Anthony Alex (Florida State) tied for fourth with a 9-under 207.

Derek Bard (Virginia) finished seventh with a 7-under 209.

Jordan Chael (Nebraska) tied for fifth with a 5-over 221 tournament total.

Cape Fear National Men’s Intercollegiate — Leland, NC — March 15-16, 2015

Matthew Yun (Nyack College) tied for second with a 3-over 219 tournament total. He carded three consecutive birdies on holes No. 10-12 in round three.

Kieran Purcell (Delaware) tied for sixth with a 5-over 221 tournament total. He made par or better on the entire front nine in round two.

Talis Park Challenge — Naples, FL — March 15-16, 2015

Theo Humphrey (Vanderbilt) tied for 10th with a 2-under 211. He carded back-to-back birdies in all three rounds.

Sacramento State Invitational — Roseville, CA — March 16-17, 2015

Astha Madan (Sacramento State) tied for fourth with a 12-over 228 tournament total. She made par or better on holes No. 8 through 18 in round three.

Alexa Schendelman (Montana) tied for fourth with a 12-over 228 tournament total.

Jackrabbit Invitational (Women’s) — Primm, NV — March 16-17, 2015

Sydney MacDonald (South Dakota State) tied for seventh with a 3-over 219 tournament total. She made par or better on holes No. 1 through 15 in round one and carded back-to-back birdies twice in round two.

Jackrabbit Invitational (Men’s) — Primm, NV — March 16-17, 2015

Carl Jonson (UNLV) finished third with a 15-under 201 tournament total. He shot in the 60s in all three rounds including two 6-under 66s. Jonson finished round one with three consecutive birdies on holes No. 16 through 18. He made par or better on holes No. 8 through 18 in round two and holes No. 1 through 14 in round three.

Arizona Wildcat Invitational — Tucson, AZ — March 16-17, 2015

Karen Chung (Southern California) won with an 11-under 205 tournament total to lead the Trojans to victory. She made par or better on every hole in round one on her way to a 5-under 67 and carded back-to-back birdies in all three rounds.

Kyung Kim (Southern California) finished fourth with an 8-under 208. She made par or better one holes No. 1 through 11 in round two.

Annie Park (Southern California) tied for fifth with a 6-under 210. She made par or better on holes No. 1 through 10 in round two.

As the temperature rises, so does the number of collegiate golf competitions held each week. Over the past week, IJGT alums competed in tournaments across the country. The following IJGT ELITE recorded top-10 finishes in NCAA tournaments last week:

Darius Rucker Intercollegiate — Hilton Head Island, SC — March 6-8, 2015

Gurbani Singh (Duke), who tied for fifth in the 2011 IJGT Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions, carded a 4-over 217 tournament total to tie for seventh and help lead her team to victory. The Blue Devils finished with a 6-over 858 to defeat second-place finishers Louisiana State and Southern California by nine strokes.

Fellow IJGT alum Kyung Kim (Southern California) also tied for seventh. She made par on the entire front nine in round two.

Tiger Invitational — Opelika, AL — March 8-10, 2015

Ben Schlottman (Auburn), who has two first-place finishes on the IJGT, tied for third with a 6-under 210 tournament total.

Colleton River Collegiate — Bluffton, SC — March 9-10, 2015

John Jackopsic (Boston College) earned co-medalist honors tying for first with a 2-under 214 tournament total. He carded a 4-under 68 in round two on the Nicklaus course.

Jack Smith (Tennessee), who won two IJGT championships, helped lead the Volunteers to the title landing in a tie for fourth with a 2-over 218. Smith carded a 4-under 68 in the first round on the Nicklaus course.

Jack Sparling (Miami OH) tied for ninth with a 5-over 221 tournament total.

TaylorMade Adidas Intercollegiate (Men) –Beaufort, SC — March 9-10, 2015

John Chaney (Wittenberg), who tied for fourth in the 2010 IJGT Tournament of Champions, finished fourth with an 8-over 224 tournament total.

TaylorMade Adidas Intercollegiate (Women) –Beaufort, SC — March 9-10, 2015

Liza Freed (Washington & Lee), who has two first-place finishes on the IJGT, finished third with a 14-over 158 tournament total.

Jane Hopkinson-Wood (Wittenberg), who competed on the IJGT for three seasons, tied for sixth with a 165 tournament total.

Bash at the Beach — North Myrtle Beach, SC — March 9-10, 2015

Poom Pattaropong (James Madison), who competed on the IJGT for three seasons, tied for eighth with a 3-under 210 tournament total.

UNF Collegiate — Jacksonville, FL — March 9-10, 2015

Megan Wilshire (North Florida), the 2011 Major Championship at Greenbrier champion, and Alessandra Liu (William & Mary), the 2011 IJGT Architects Club champion, tied for ninth with 9-over 225 tournament totals. Wilshire was extremely consistent shooting 75 in all three rounds.

Yuka Kajiki (Houston) finished eighth with an 8-over 224 tournament total.

Sacramento State Intercollegiate — Sacramento, CA — March 9-10, 2015

Mariano Rossi (Grand Canyon), a fourth-place finisher in the 2011 IJGT Major Championship at World Golf Village, finished sixth with a 1-over 217 tournament total. He carded a 4-under 68 in the third round.

St. Edward’s Invitational — Austin, TX — March 9-10, 2015

Paul Drinkwater (St. Edward’s), a third-place finisher in the 2009 IJGT event at Port Royal Golf Club, tied for sixth with a 2-under 138 tournament total.

It’s that time of year! Conference championships were in full swing the last few weeks, and they displayed just how successful the IJGT ELITE is in NCAA competition. With 63 players finishing in the top-10 of a multitude of conference championships, the end of the season is really beginning to showcase just how well our alumni compete at the next level of competition.

In addition to the vast amount of top-10 finishes, seven conference championships were won by our alumni, with wins coming in the following conferences: the SEC Women’s, SoCon Men’s, Atlantic Sun Men’s, Ohio Valley Men’s, Patriot League Men’s, Big West Men’s, and the Mid-American Women’s!

Kyung Kim (Southern Cal) won her third career collegiate title last week, winning the Bruin Wave Invitational by one stroke over teammates Doris Chen and fellow IJGT ELITE member, Annie Park. The three-day tournament in Tarzana, California at the El Caballero Country Club was dominated by Southern Cal, who took over the lead by five strokes on Monday, only to build that lead to 13 strokes at the end of the final day. Kim led Southern Cal with rounds of 70, 70 and 73, shooting a 3-under-par 213 for the tournament, to hold off Park and Chen for the win.

Kyung Kim was a consistent Top-10 finisher on the IJGT, including a Top-10 finish at Rancho Bernardo in 2006. Kyung’s second win this season continues to show her prowess in the collegiate ranks, and the IJGT ELITE is proud to see her achievements! Congrats, again, Kyung!

IJGT ELITE Continue to Excel in NCAA Competition

It has been another week of NCAA competitions, and another week of the IJGT ELITE dominating at the collegiate level. 18 golfers posted Top-10 finishes this week in NCAA competition, with four ELITE members hoisting individual trophies this week at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, the Sacramento State Invitational, the Bruin Wave Invitational, and the 18th Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic.

At the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, Katia Joo (Boston College) scored a 4-over 220 to tie for first, roaring back from starting in ninth place on the final day of competition. Over at the Sacramento State Invitational, Lawrence Ree (Loyola Marymount) competed as an individual and scored a 4-under-par 212 to tie for the individual win.  The Bruin Wave Invitational, where the IJGT ELITE was extraordinarily represented, was won by Kyung Kim (Southern Cal) after she shot a 3-under-par 213 for the tournament. And at the 18th Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic, Kevin Lee (Long Beach State) fired an 8-under-par 202 to take the individual crown.

Jacob Stockl (Rutgers), the 2010 IJGT Champion at Hershey Country Club, finished in ninth, shooting a 5-over 221.

 Harmony Golf Preserve Intercollegiate – Harmony FL – March 3-5, 2014

Ted Brennan (Villanova), who had 11 Top-10 finishes on the IJGT, shot a 3-over 219 to tie for tenth.

 Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate – Pine Mountain, GA – March 1-2, 2014

Jeff Wells (Methodist Univ.), a third-place finisher in 2008 on the IJGT at Twin Oaks,  tied for third place with an even-par 144.

Cory Howard (LaGrange College), who had a Top-25 finish in 2009 on the IJGT at TPC Sawgrass, tied for ninth with a 5-over 149.

Tommy McCloskey (Berry College), a Top-20 finisher in 2011 on the IJGT at Oyster Reef, tied for ninth with a 5-over 149.

INDIVIDUAL CO-CHAMPION: Lawrence Ree (Loyola Marymount, competing as individual). 4 Top-10 IJGT Finishes

Tyler Torano (Loyola Marymount), a 2007 IJGT Tournament of Champions Top-20 finisher, fired a 2-under 214 to finish tied for third.

 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational – San Jose, CA – March 3-4, 2014

Annie Freman (Santa Clara), who finished second on the IJGT in 2009 at Sycuan Resort, tied for fifth with an even-par 216.

Cassy Isagawa (Oregon), the 2008 IJGT Champion at Temecula Creek, also tied for fifth with an even-par 216.

 Davidson College Invitational – March 3-4, 2014

Chris Crawford (Drexel), who had a Top-10 finish on the IJGT in 2009 at Seaview, earned a fifth place finish with his 3-over 147.

Jack Smith (Tennessee), the 2011 IJGT Major Champion at Greenbrier, finished in sixth with a 4-over 148.

Bruin Wave Invitational – Tarzana, CA – March 3-4, 2014

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPION: Kyung Kim (Southern Cal), IJGT Top-10 at 2006 Rancho Bernardo

Annie Park (Southern Cal), the 2006 IJGT Champion at the Architect’s Club, finished tied for second place with a 2-under 214.

Marissa Chow (Pepperdine), the 2008 IJGT Champion at The Tribute Golf Club, tied for fourth place, shooting an even-par 216. 

Notable Mention: Erynne Lee (UCLA), who finished in second place in 2005 on the IJGT at The Sandpiper, scored a HOLE-IN-ONE on the the par 3, 6th hole at the host course, El Caballero Country Club!

Jason Roets (North Texas), the 2007 IJGT Champion at TPC Sawgrass, shot a 3-over 147 to tie for ninth place.

The IJGT ELITE Class continues to shine in the NCAA ranks, with 14 alumni scoring in the top 10 of NCAA tournaments, including an impressive win by Marta Sanz (Auburn) at the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational.

The following are IJGT ELITE members who recorded great finishes in the week of February 21-28, 2014:

Blake Cannon (Arizona State), the fourth-place finisher at the 2010 IJGT Tournament of Champions, recorded a third place finish, with a 10-under-par 206, at the Snowman Getaway Invitational on February 25, 2014 in Goodyear, Arizona.

Annie Freman (Santa Clara), a repeat Top-three finisher on the IJGT, tied for sixth with a 13-over-par 229 at the Grand Canyon Women’s Spring Invitational on February 25, 2014 in Litchfield Park, Arizona.

Beau Hossler (Texas), who was a third-place finisher at the 2007 IJGT Tournament of Champions, shot a 4-under-par 212 to tie for seventh at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship on February 23, 2014 in Houston, Texas.

Cassy Isagawa (Oregon), the 2008 IJGT Champion at Temecula Creek, tied for second at the Westbrook Spring Invitational, finishing with a 9-under-par 207 on February 24, 2014 in Peoria, Arizona.

Broc Johnson (Arizona State), a Top-three finisher in two IJGT tournaments, shot a 9-under-par 207 to tie for fourth at the Snowman Getaway Invitational on February 25, 2014 in Goodyear, Arizona.

Kyung Kim (Southern Cal), who had a top-10 finish on the IJGT at Rancho Bernardo in 2006, tied for eighth with a 4-under-par 212 at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational on February 25, 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Erynne Lee (UCLA), the IJGT second-place finisher at Sandpiper in 2005, recorded a 5-under 211 to tie for sixth at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational,  on February 25, 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Brendan Lemp (Loyola Univ. – Maryland), the 2009 IJGT Champion at Wintonbury Hills, shot an eight-under 208 to tie for seventh at the Snowman Getaway Invitational on February 25, 2014 in Goodyear, Arizona.

Annie Park (Southern Cal), the 2006 IJGT Champion at Duke University, tied for eighth at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational on February 25, 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana, shooting a four-under 212.

Jordan Rodgers (BYU), who scored a third place finish at the 2008 IJGT tournament at Temecula Creek,  tied for sixth with a six-over 222 at the Jones Sports Invitational on February 25, 2014 in Somis, California.

Jason Roets (North Texas), who had 20 Top-5 finishes on the IJGT, tied for sixth at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on February 25, 2014 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, recording a three-under 213 for the tournament.

Jerry Ruiz (Baylor), a top-three finisher in IJGT merit points in 2007, tied for fifth at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship, shooting a six-under 210 for the tournament, on February 23, 2014 in Houston, Texas.

Marta Sanz, a Top-three finisher in six IJGT tournaments, won the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational with an eight-under 208 on February 25, 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Rachel Welker (Eastern Kentucky), a Top-10 finisher on the IJGT in several tournaments, tied for seventh, shooting a nine-over 225, at the 12th Annual USA Women’s Invitational on February 25, 2014 in Mobile, Alabama.
