IJGT Alum Gonzalo Rubio wins Jims Rivers Intercollegiate

Former International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) player and current standout sophomore at the University of North Texas, Gonzalo Rubio, blew away the competition this weekend on his way to a victory at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. The event was hosted by Louisiana Tech, and took place at the Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La. on Oct. 21-22, 2013.

After recently notching his first collegiate top ten finish with a career-best performance at the Graeme McDowell Shoal Creek Invitational on Sept. 30-Oct. 1, Rubio kept up his dominant play and shot a total 69-67-71–208, an 8-under-par performance that would seal his victory by two strokes. This was the best performance by a North Texas golfer in a par-72 event since 1998.

In the first of three rounds, Rubio carded a 3-under-par 69, making birdies on three of the first four holes. His 3-under 33 on the front nine was followed up with three more birdies on the back to tally a 69 on the day. This put him atop the leaderboard going into the second round. In his best round of the tournament and his career, Rubio shot a lights-out 5-under-par 67  in a bogey-free round with five birdies. Though he cooled off a bit in the final round, shooting an even-par 72, Rubio was able to hold onto his lead with three birdies and 13 pars on the day. The North Texas team finished sixth in the event behind Rubio’s performance.

While with the IJGT, Rubio played in several events, with his most recent win coming in the 2011-2012 season at the Florida Swing at Falcon’s Fire. Following the last Fall event for the North Texas Men’s Golf Team, Rubio and the Mean Green can be caught in action again at the Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on Feb. 10-11, 2014.
