Halleron wins fourth consecutive IJGT tournament
Brooks dominates Girls Division
The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Northeast Tour traveled to Maryland to host the Major Championship at Bulle Rock on April 25-26, 2015. Juniors competed for IJGT Merit Points, national rankings, AJGA stars and North American Junior Amateur exemptions during the two-day, 36-hole event.
Jack Halleron of Timonium, Md., followed his round one 78 with a 79 in round two to finish with a 157 tournament total and a victory in the Boys 14 & Under Division. Halleron recorded the division’s longest par-or-better streak, which came on holes No. 9 through 15 in round one. The win was Halleron’s fourth consecutive IJGT victory.
“It was exciting to win against such a strong field,” Halleron said after the tournament. “This win feels really good.”
Ford Bennett of Owings Mills, Md., carded a 159 tournament total to finish second. Luke Sample of New York, N.Y., and Lou Baker of Timonium, Md., finished just one stroke behind Bennett with 160 tournament totals, good for a share of third place.
Shannon Brooks of Vienna, Va., made par or better on the entire front nine, including a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole, to finish the first round with a 1-over 73. She built off her round one lead to card a 5-over 77 in round two, good for a 150 tournament total and the Girls Division title. “I came out today wanting to play the same as I did yesterday,” she said after her win.
Brooks made par a division-best 25 times during the tournament. She led the division in scoring average on both par-4s and par-5s to win by an impressive eight strokes. “I am excited to be playing golf for the University of Tennessee next year,” Brooks said when asked about her future plans. “I know a lot of the girls on the team and it is a good group of golfers. I am excited to be playing in a great conference.”
Sirena Walsh of Chantilly, Va., finished second with a 158 tournament total. She carded back-to-back birdies on the par-4 sixth and par-3 seventh holes in round two. She also earned the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female golfers to card the lowest scores in the final round of an event.
Wilmington, Del., native Phoebe Brinker and Towson Md., native Charlotte Simpson tied for third with 168 tournament totals. Simpson birdied the par-4 first hole in both rounds.
Brinker carded five birdies during the tournament to win the EyeLine Golf Golden Putter Award, the award presented to the junior to card the most birdies in each division.
Cole Berger of Malvern, Pa., made par on the 18th hole in round two to win the Boys 15-19 Division by a single stroke.
