IJGT Philly Open at Radley Run Country Club – Final Results

Gianelos earns victory in playoff at Radley Run Country Club

Lees wins third IJGT title in Girls Division

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) continued the 2015 Fall Season with the IJGT Philly Open at Radley Run Country Club. Junior golfers ages 10-19 years old and representing five different states competed in the 36-hole tournament for IJGT Merit Points and National Rankings.

36 holes was not enough to crown a champion in the Boys 15-19 Division. Nicholas Gianelos of West Chester, Pa., earned the victory in playoff fashion with a par on the first playoff hole. Gianelos, a member of Radley Run Country Club, used his knowledge of the course to pull out the victory over Thomas Moran of Marietta, Pa. Both Gianelos and Moran ended the tournament with a score of 154.

Gianelos started off the tournament with a solid opening front nine with a 1-over, 37. He ended the first round with a 77, which put him in a tie for second place behind first-round leader Anthony Cordaro of Pittsburgh, Pa., who recorded a 3-over, 75.

In the final round, Gianelos was in the penultimate pairing so getting off to a good start would be crucial in putting together a comeback. He did just that starting off the final round with a 38 on his opening nine. Gianelos added a birdie on the par-5, 12th hole at Radley Run Country Club to put himself in position. He finished with another 77, which earned him a spot in the aforementioned playoff for the Boys 15-19 Division title.

“I went into the playoff treating it like match play. Whatever he did I had to beat,” commented Gianelos.

There was a tie for third place in the Boys 15-19 Division between Cordaro and Ben Pochet of Royersford, Pa., who finished with a tournament total of 156.

Jack Cornforth of Summit, N.J., fired a 2-over, 74 in the final round to earn the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, which goes to one boy and one girl who record the lowest final-round score in every IJGT tournament.

In the Girls Division, Kaitlyn Lees of Byrn Mawr, Pa., earned the victory with a tournament total of 151. Lees put together the best two rounds of the tournament in the division to claim a 16-stroke victory. During her first round, Lees was 1-under-par through 13 holes, but gave a few strokes back as she started off the tournament with a 3-over, 75 to build a six-stroke lead going into the final round. Lees started the final round with a 40 on her opening nine, but quickly bounced back with birdies on holes Nos. 10-11 to end all doubts of a comeback. Lees closed with a solid even-par 36 on her last nine holes to earn her third career IJGT title.

“I came into today with the same mentality as yesterday. I did not want the lead to get to my head,” said Lees.

The Philly Open at Radley Run – Final Results (Sept. 14, 2014)

Murphy nabs first career IJGT title
Cornforth’s first IJGT tournament a win

The IJGT traveled north to host the Philly Open at Radley Run on September 13-14, 2014. The originally planned two-day, 36-hole tournament was limited to one day and 18 holes due to inclement weather in round one. The field of 38 juniors were unable to complete a full round on day one due to heavy rains, leaving winners of each division to be determined by round two’s scores. Juniors competed for national rankings and IJGT merit points.

Murphy, LiamIn his fourth IJGT tournament, Liam Murphy of Hockessin, Del., won the Boys 15-19 Division. Murphy began slow, carding a 2-over-par score of 38 on his opening nine but used five pars and two birdies for an even-par final nine. His score of 74 was one stroke ahead of the tie for second place between Karsen Rush of Chambersburg, Pa., and David Kim of Dresher, Pa. The pair tallied two birdies each in their performances of 3-over 75 to share second.

“I was feeling sick all week so I wanted to come out here and push through and do the best I could,” said Murphy following his win.

Murphy’s score of 74 was the lowest of the male divisions, earning him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female with the lowest score in the second round of the tournament.

Cornforth, Jack copyJack Cornforth of South Hamilton, Mass., secured first in the Boys 14 & Under Division in his first appearance in an IJGT tournament. A 10-hole streak of par or better, featuring two birdies, was the highlight of Cornforth’s performance. He finished with a score of 76, one stroke ahead of second place finisher Evan Greenplate of York, Pa. Rounding out the top three was Jon Nolan Perry of Berwyn, Pa. with a score of 79.

“I improved a lot over the summer and I wanted to come out here and keep improving,” said Cornforth.

Evanko, Kate copyLeading the Girls Division by four strokes, the largest margin of the tournament, Kate Evanko of West Chester, Pa., won with a score of 83. Seven pars and a single birdie allowed Evanko to take a commanding lead over Rebecca Chiger of Elkins Park, Pa., and Lauren Muhlbauer of Newtown, Pa., who tied for second with scores of 87. The share of second place was the best finish for both Mulbauer and Chiger who was in her first IJGT tournament.

“Being at my home course really helped. I knew where to miss and it helped me all throughout the day,” commented Evanko.

Evanko took home the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the Girls Division.

The IJGT will continue tournament play on September 20-21, 2014, in both the northeast and southeast regions. The Northeast Tour will host the IJGT Jersey Open at Buena Vista Country Club in Buena, N.J., and the Southeast Tour will host the IJGT College Series at NC State in Raleigh, N.C.
