IJGT Junior Open at Pelham Bay – Round one recap (Oct. 11, 2014)

The IJGT’s Northeast Tour traveled to Bronx, N.Y., for the first time in history for the IJGT Junior Open at Pelham Bay. The event was held at Pelham Bay Golf Course featuring tee times beginning at 12 noon for round one on October 11, 2014. In review of round one, below is each division’s leaders’ rounds, in numbers.

Paul Terminello of White Plains, N.Y., leads the Boys 15-19 Division. His round in numbers:

73 – his first round opening score of 2-over-par 73

4 – total birdies Terminello recorded, tied for the most across all three divisions

2 – he had a streak of par or better for four holes twice in his round, one on both the front and back nine

The Boys 14 & Under Division is led by Matthew Minerva Jr. of Elmsford, N.Y. His round in numbers:

76 – his round one score

2 – Minerva, the only member of the Boys 14 & Under to card a birdie, had two in total

1 – this is his first IJGT event of his career

Madison Braman of Loudonville, N.Y., leads the Girls Division. Her round in numbers:

72 – she shot an opening round of 1-over-par

10 – Braman carries a 10-stroke lead over the division

5 – Braman played the round’s par-5 holes at par or better, including birdies on No. 2 and No. 9. Braman also finished fifth at The Architects Cup on October 4-5, 2014, in Loptacong, N.J.

The Architects Cup presented by IJGA at The Architects Golf Club – Round one recap

The IJGT traveled to New Jersey for the second time this fall season to host The Architects Cup presented by the IJGA at Architects Golf Club in Lopatcong, N.J. The tournament teed off at noon on Saturday, October 4, 2014. In review, below is each division’s leaders’ rounds, in numbers.

The Boys 15-19 Division is led by Michael Lamond of West Chester, Pa., His round in numbers:

33 – Lamond shot a 2-under-par on the front nine

69– His opening round score of 69 was two-under-par, four strokes ahead of the division

1 – Lamond recorded a single eagle on the par-5 No. 1

The Boys 14 & under Division, T.J. Buck of Penfield, N.Y., leads after round one. His round in numbers:

84 – His round one score, eight strokes ahead of the competition

9– He placed ninth in The Architects Cup appearance in April 12-13, 2013

6– Buck’s total number of holes he carded par or better in his opening round

Megan McLean from Lebanon, N.J., and Allyson Wentworth of Stewartsville, N.J., are tied in the Girls Division. Their rounds in numbers:

McLEAN:

72 – Her 1-over score for the opening round

4 – Total number of pars, two of which were difficult par-4 holes

2 – McLean tied Wentworth for second at The Architects Cup on April 12-13, 2014

WENTWORTH:

72 – She also recorded a 1-over score to share first at the end of round one

8 – Consecutive number of holes she went par or better

3 – Total number of birdies on her round

4 – This is Wentworth’s fourth consecutive appearance in the IJGT’s Architects Cup event

IJGT Upstate Challenge at Brook Lea Country Club – Round one recap (Sept. 27, 2014)

The IJGT’s Northeast Tour traveled north for its fourth tournament of the fall season. Held at Brook Lea CC in Rochester, N.Y., the IJGT hosted the IJGT Upstate Challenge, teeing off at noon on Saturday, September 27, 2014. In review, below is each division’s leaders’ rounds, in numbers.

The Boys 15-19 Division is led by Ben Reichert of East Amherst, N.Y., His round in numbers:

35 – Reichert shot a 1-under-par on the front nine
72 – he shot an even-par 72 for his opening round
1 – the number of eagles he carded

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Patrick Kelly of Erie, Pa., leads after round one. His round in numbers:

80 – his round one score after the opening 18 holes
4 – Kelly’s longest par or better streak, coming on hole No. 12-15
1 – this is Kelly’s first IJGT event

IJGT Lowcountry Open at Oldfield Golf Club – Round one recap (Sept. 27, 2014)

The IJGT Southeast Tour stayed local this week, hosting the IJGT Lowcountry Open at Oldfield Golf Club on September 27-28, 2014. The venue greeted more than 80 juniors competing for national rankings and IJGT merit points. In review, below are the rounds, in numbers, of the divisional leaders.

A tight race in round one resulted in a shared lead of the Boys 15-19 Division. Tennoshin Ogawa of Ichinomiya-shi, Japan, and Conor Byrne of Dublin, Ireland, lead the first round with an even par 72. Below are their rounds in numbers:

TENNOSHIN OGAWA
72 – his round one score, Ogawa is one of four juniors to shoot even par or better for round one
3 – carded par or better for three straight holes
3 – total number of birdies
4 –total number of pars for all par-3s

CONOR BYRNE 
4 – Bryne recorded par or better on the 4 straight holes
4 – total number of birdies
14 –  number of holes on which Bryne carded par or better
2 – Bryne birdied the last two holes of each nine

In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Dong Jin Park of Seoul, South Korea, and Alan Smith of Winchendon, Mass., are tied for the lead, shooting a 2-over-par 74. Here are their rounds in numbers:

DONG JIN PARK
5 – Park carded five consecutive pars on his final holes of the first round
14 – the number of holes Park carded par or better
2 – total number of birdies, coming on No. 11 and No. 18, both par-5s.

ALAN SMITH
2 – the number of birdies Smith made during his opening round, coming on No. 1 and No. 18
35 – Smith carded eight pars and 1 birdie on his opening nine to be 1-under-par at the turn
7- Smith carded seven consecutive birdies on the back nine

In the Girls Division, there was yet another tie for the lead at 1-under-par 71 between Isidora Quevedo of Santiago, Chile, and Sophie Guo of Bluffton, S.C. Here are their rounds in numbers:

ISIDORA QUEVEDO
9 – Quevedo carded nine consecutive pars after bogeying her opening hole
4 – the number of birdies Quevedo made during her back nine
34 – Quevedo carded a 2-under-par 34 on her back nine, with birdies coming from Nos. 11, 12, 14 and 16.

SOPHIE GUO
34 – Guo also carded a 2-under-par 34 on her back nine, with birdies coming from Nos. 13, 14, and 18.
6 – the longest par streak Guo had during her opening round
15 – the number of holes Guo made par or better

Summer Series at University of Maryland – Round one recap

The IJGT kicked off round one of the final Summer Series event for the 2014 summer season at University of Maryland Golf Club in College Park, Md. Juniors teed off in the early afternoon on August 19, 2014, to compete for national rankings. In review, below is each division’s leaders’ rounds, in numbers.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Jordan Bobb of Rockville, Md., leads. His round in numbers:

73 – his 2-over-par score for round one

34 – Bobb scored a 1-under-par front nine score, the lowest nine-hole score of the day

6 – his longest par or better streak which included two birdies

Graysen Bright of Rockville, Md., leads the Girls Division. Her round in numbers:

78 – her round one score, a total after a front nine score of 38 and a back nine score of 40

11 – Bright leads the division by 11 strokes

2 – total number of birdies posted in her round, coming on the par-4 No. 3 and the par 3 No. 11

Summer Series at Rock Spring – Round one recap

In one of the two remaining Summer Series events, the IJGT traveled to Rock Spring Club in West Orange, N.J., for round one on August 12, 2014. Unfortunately, heavy rain and wet conditions presented its share of challenges to the field of juniors.  Nonetheless, the players did their best to stay dry and proceeded to post low scores. In review, each division’s leaders’ round in numbers is below.
Ezekiel Zhao of Annapolis, Md., and John Dantonio of Lancaster, N.Y., share the lead for the Boys 15-19 Division.  Their rounds by the numbers:
35- the lowest nine-hole score, 1-under-par, recorded by Zhao on the back nine
12- the number of holes both Dantonio and Zhao finished with par or better
5- number of combined birdies between Dantonio and Zhao
75- the round one score that has the pair in a tie
Coming off a victory at the Summer Series at the Ridge at Back Brook, Spencer Weiner of Short Hills, N.J., leads the Boys 14 & Under Division.  His round in numbers:
76-  his first round score
11- the umber of holes Weiner finished par or better
2- total number of birdies in his first round
The Girls Division is currently lead by Summer Kitahara of Greenwich, Conn.  Her round by the numbers:
35- Kitahara recorded the lowest nine-hole score of the division
6 – her longest par or better streak, coming on holes No. 4-9
8- the number of strokes she leads by headed into the second round

Summer Series at Pine Ridge Golf Club – Round one recap

Continuing its northeast leg of the Summer Series, the IJGT headed to the Long Island for the Summer Series at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Coram, N.Y. The first round was played on August 5,2014, and players were greeted with ideal playing conditions, warm temperatures and a cool breeze. In review of round one, each division’s leader’s rounds in numbers are as follows:

The  Boys 15-19 Division is led by Neil Vyas of Forrest Hills, N.Y. His round in numbers:

84 – his round one score after 18 holes

7 – number of pars in his first round

1 – number of birdies in his round; he also leads the division by 1 stroke

Cole Staisil of New York, N.Y., leads the Boys 14 & Under Division. His round in numbers:

92 –  his round one score after 18 holes

46 – Staisil recorded consistent scores of 46 on both the front and back nine

3 – the number of pars in his first round, also his third IJGT event of his career

Summer Series at the Ridge at Back Brook – Round one recap

As the IJGT Summer Series makes its way back to the northeast, round one of the Summer Series at the Ridge at Back Brook was held in Ringoes, N.J., on July 29, 2014. Presented by BlueGolf as the Featured Junior Tournament, the Summer Series at the Ridge at Back Brook featured a full field of 53 talented junior golfers. With temperatures sitting comfortably in the upper 70s, the weather was ideal for the first 18 of 36 holes. At the conclusion of round one, we review each division’s leader’s round in numbers.

The Boys 15-19 Division is led by Michael Cook of Berwyn, Pa. His round in numbers:

7 – total number of birdies in the round, three of which were consecutive to finish his round on holes 16-18

6 – he leads the division by six strokes

4 – his round one score of 68 is 4-under-par

3 – the Summer Series at the Ridge at Back Brook is the third IJGT event of Cook’s career

Ryan Pongrac leads the Boys 14 & Under Division. His round in numbers:

80 – his round one score after 18 holes

5 – his longest par or better streak which included two of his three birdies of the day

4 – Pongrac comes off four top-five finishes in the 2013-2014 IJGT season

2 – he leads the division by two strokes

In the Girls Division, Haley Bookholdt leads. Her round in numbers:

77 – her round one score, one stroke ahead of the competition

11 – total number of pars she recorded in round one

6 – Bookholdt boasts six top-10 finishes coming into the Summer Series at the Ridge at Back Brook

1 – she carded one birdie on the par-4 No. 10

Summer Series at Olde Stonewall – Round one recap

Continuing with the Summer Series, the IJGT traveled to  in Ellwood City, Pa., to host round one at Olde Stonewall Golf Club. Overcast skies and mild temperatures made for golf-friendly conditions, translating to some low scoring. In review, divisional leaders’ rounds in numbers are below.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Matt Barto of Leechburg, Pa., leads. His round in numbers:

71- his 1-over-par score 71 to put himself in first place

35- front nine score, even par to help him en route to his lead

2- number of birdies throughout his round

13- number of pars carded

In the Girls Division, Synclaire Kuhn of McMurray, Pa., is leading the pack. Her round in numbers:

77- her round-one score, enough to sit in the lead

3- Kuhn played the par-3s of the course at an impressive 1-under for round one

4- number of birdies she carded in her first round

Chris Tanabe of Sewickley, Pa., leads the Boys 14 & Under Division after shooting a first round 84. His round in numbers:

3- number of back-nine birdies he tallied

2- Tanabe was an impressive 2-under on the course’s par-3 holes

6 – total pars that aided in his first-round lead over the division

Orlando Junior at Falcon's Fire Golf Club – Round one recap

The IJGT traveled south to the fan favorite Falcon’s Fire Golf Club to host the Orlando Junior on May 10-11, 2014. Hot but breezy weather greeted the field of 61 juniors in the first round. Leaders in each division are below, their rounds in numbers:

Brock Erwin of Muldrow, Okla., leads the Boys 15-19 Division. His round in numbers:

73 – Erwin posted 1-over-par round-one score

35 – he carded a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine

13 – this is Erwin’s 13th IJGT event of the season

9 – par-or-better streak on each of the holes on the front nine

4 – number of birdies he tallied in round one

The Boys 14 & Under Division is led by Luis Sanchez of Tampico, Mexico. His round in numbers:

75 – his round-one 3-over-par score

13 – Sanchez comes into the Orlando Junior with 13 top-10 finishes in IJGT events

11 – par-or-better streak from holes eight and 18

2 – number of birdies tallied on holes four and 17

The Girls Division is led by Kelly Whaley of Farmington, Conn., her round in numbers:

72 – Whaley posted an even-par score of 72, the lowest score of the tournament

10 – number of pars on the round

4 – number of birdies on the round

1 – Whaley placed first in her last appearance at Falcon’s Fire on May 11-12, 2013
