SC Callaway Junior World Qualifier – Round one recap

Hosting the first Callaway Junior World Qualifier event of the season in the southeast, the IJGT has played round one at Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run in Hilton Head Island, S.C., May 3-4, 2014. With rain showers escaping the forecast, the weather was in the low 70s and slightly overcast. The field features 59 juniors in three divisions, all chasing a ticket to Callaway. The round-one leaders and their rounds in numbers are below:

The Boys 15-19 Division is led by Parathakorn Suyasri of Chonburi, Thailand. His round in numbers:

69 – his round-one score, the lowest of the tournament across all divisions

13 – the final 13 holes where he posted a streak of par or better

5 – number of birdies, three of which came on par-5 holes

1 – the SC Callaway Junior World Qualifier is the first IJGT event on Suyasri’s resume

Brooks Dyess of Hilton Head Island, S.C., leads the Boys 14 & Under Division after round one. His round in numbers:

75 – round one score, two strokes ahead of the competition

5 – five-stroke improvement from the front nine to the back nine

2 – this is the second IJGT event Dyess has played

1 – one birdie tallied on the par-4 17th hole

The Girls Division is led by Yuki Nakayama of Kawasakishi, Japan. Her round in numbers:

73 – her one-over-par round-one score

79 – her previous best single-round score in tournament play

7 – number of events in which Nakayama placed in the top 10

4 – number of birdies in the round

Arizona Junior at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club – Round one recap

 

The IJGT headed out west for the second time this 2013-2014 season to host the Arizona Junior at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, a first-time venue for the tour. With an uncommonly cool and overcast day in the low 80s, juniors took the course to compete. In review, divisional leaders’ rounds in numbers are below.

Hayden Plewe of Cortez, Colo., leads the Boys 15-19 Division. His round in numbers:

74 – his round-one score, standing at 2-over-par

20 – Plewe finished in 20th in his last appearance in an IJGT event

15 – number of holes he posted par or better

1 – number of strokes he leads by after round one

In the Boys 14 and Under Division, Roman Aragon of La Palma, Calif., leads. His round in numbers:

83 – his round-one score

4 – longest streak of posting par

41 – his best nine-hole score, posted on the front nine

1 – Arizona Junior is Aragon’s first-ever IJGT event

From Hamburg, N.Y., Molly Balbierz leads the Girls Division. Her round in numbers:

85 – her round-one score

8 – number of holes she cardied par

5 – Balbierz finished with par on all par-5 holes

2 – she finished tied for second in her last appearance at an IJGT event
