Summer Series at Stafford Country Club – Final Results

Barney wins first IJGT title in Boys 15-19 Division

Penn captures Girls Division crown in last IJGT event

STAFFORD, N.Y. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) continued its summer tournament schedule in Stafford, N.Y., on July 9-10, 2015, with the Summer Series at Stafford Country Club. It was a tale of two days with the weather conditions during the event. The first round featured a consistent rain, while the final round featured near perfect temperatures and sunshine. Junior golfers ranging in age from 14-18 years old and representing 3 different states competed for IJGT Merit Points along with National Rankings.

In the Boys 15-19 Division, Nick Barney, of Apalachin, N.Y., earned his first IJGT title after carding two consistent rounds of 4-over 76 and 3-over 75. The weather was very challenging on the first day with constant rain coming down during the duration of the round. Barney was able to keep his mental composure as he managed his way around the golf course. Finishing the day with a 4-over 76, Barney found himself tied in first place with David Hanes of Elma, N.Y. The highlight of Barney’s round came on hole No. 15, where he was able to make an eagle.

The final round got off to a slow start as Barney made bogey on the opening three holes at Stafford Country Club. However, he quickly bounced back with a string of five pars and one birdie to close out the front nine with a 2-over 38. He continued his hot play on the first six holes on the back nine, playing them in 1-under. Barney would finish his round of 3-over 75 en route to his three-stroke victory.

“I just wanted to go out and post a good score and it ended up working for me,” commented Barney when asked about his mindset going into the final round with the lead.

There was a tie for second place with Ian Brotherton of Attica, N.Y., and Ryan Zogby of New Hartford, N.Y., who finished with tournament totals of 154. Zogby’s final-round 2-over 74 earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, which goes to the boy and girl who records the lowest final-round score in every IJGT tournament.

The Girls Division was won in wire-to-wire fashion by Marah Penn of Hamburg, N.Y., who recorded tournament scores of 77 and 3-over 75 for her victory. Penn, a 2015 graduate and incoming freshmen on the Elon University Women’s Golf team, battled the conditions in the first round building herself a four-stroke lead going into the final round.

The final round was more of the same for Penn, who carded two birdies on the day to record a 3-over 75 giving her a nine-stroke victory in the Girls Division. This was Penn’s first IJGT victory, which comes in her last IJGT event before she heads off to college in August. Penn’s final-round score of 3-over 75 during the final round earned her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Playing in her last IJGT round, Penn noted, “I just went into today wanting to have fun and I got to play with a really good friend.”

Marissa Del Monaco of Little Valley, N.Y., recorded a tournament total of 161 to earn herself second place. Third place was won by Sarah Godfrey-Singleton of Depew, N.Y. who posted a tournament total of 162.

The IJGT hosted the Summer Series at Ridgemont Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., on July 1-2, 2014. “I putted really well. my short game really saved me today,” said Gaesser.

The Boys 14 & Under Division was won by Dylan Plis of Camillus, N.Y., the first-ever IJGT victory for the junior. Consistency was the key of his game as he posted an identical score of 78 in both rounds. His first round was highlighted by two birdies in the first three holes. His front-nine even-par score of 36 was a tournament best for Plis. Round two featured 10 pars, including a streak of five on the back nine. Plis finished with scores of 78-78 —  156.

Saddy Sadokierski of Richmond Hill, Ontario, finished second with scores of 83-85 — 168 after tallying nine pars and a birdie to start out the tournament. VICTOR, N.Y. – The IJGT made its eighth stop on the Northeast Tour to host the Rochester Open at Ravenwood Golf Club on May 3-4, 2014. IJGT Players of the Week – Sept. 28-29, 2013

Northeast Tour

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) ventured to upstate New York for the Upstate Challenge at Locust Hill Country Club on Sept. 28-29, 2013. With its narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens, Locust Hill Country Club proved to be an LPGA-caliber course. With great weather and spectacular course conditions, there were plenty of opportunities for players to score well this weekend. The Players of the Week in the Northeast Region are Sarah Godfrey-Singleton of Depew, N.Y., and Harry Jin of Palisades Park, N.J.Godfrey-Singleton

Godfrey-Singleton made her first appearance in an IJGT Event this week at Locust Hill.  After a first round 87 put her in seventh place, Godfrey-Singleton came back on day two with her sights set on posting a solid score. She did just that and improved by eight strokes on her way to carding a 79. She was also one of only three girls to break 80 in the Girls Division during the final round. This moved her up to a fourth-place finish for the tournament. After her strong finish in the final round, Godfrey-Singleton will be one to watch in future IJGT appearances.

Harry JinJin definitely made a statement this weekend in his first IJGT Event. He was able to put two great rounds together to stay in the hunt through the 36th hole. Jin was tied for the lead after firing a 1-over-par 73 on Saturday and continued to play well into Sunday where he fired a 74 to move into a tie for second place with a 3-over-par 147 total. Heading into the last hole, Jin was tied for the lead but came up a bit short on the 18th green, failing to force a playoff. He made a total of seven birdies for the weekend and with this hot start, he looks forward to the South Jersey Open at Blue Heron Pines where he will try to capture his first win in an IJGT Event.

Southeast Tour

BEAUFORT, S.C. — Meanwhile, IJGT’s Southeast Tour hosted the Sanctuary Shootout at Sanctuary Golf Club on Cat Island in Beaufort, S.C. The tournament consisted of many talented junior golfers, where contestants competed on a beautiful and challenging golf course. Norman Hong of Shenzhen, China, and Yeji Ahn of Changwon-City, South Korea, both have received Player of the Week honors for the Southeast Region.

Norman Hong (POTW)Hong, who competes in the Boys 15-19 Division, struggled his first day, shooting 14-over-par 85. Despite this first round performance, Hong came into Day 2 with a sheer determination to turn his play around; he did just that, hitting nearly every fairway in the final round. Hong shot a 3-over-par on the front nine and was on the green in regulation on every hole. He finished his final round with an 8-over-par 79, displaying consistence with his woods and irons throughout. Although this was his best outing thus far on the Southeast tour, Hong will continue to improve and will be looking for a win in upcoming tournaments.

Yeji Ahn (POTW)Ahn, competing in the Girls Division, showed how practice can make perfect over the weekend. Ahn played extremely well in the final round, shooting 14-over-par 85, an incredible 13 stroke improvement over her first round outing. This 85 mark sets Ahn’s best score so far this year and she continues to improve on a daily basis. The turning moment in the final round came when she birdied the par-5 fifth hole, putting it within two feet of the cup on her drive. From that point on, she continued to hit nearly every fairway with her driver. Ahn remains a tough competitor and truly shows that if you practice hard, it pays off in the end with great results.
