Final results from the Scottsdale Open at Troon North

Foust wins Boys 15-19 Division
Whisler captures second win of season

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) traveled to Scottsdale, Ariz., for the Scottsdale Open at Troon North on Dec. 14-15, 2013. The two-day, 36-hole event provided the players with a pure desert golf experience on the club’s Pinnacle Course, where an array of natural ravines, foothills, bentgrass greens and giant granite boulders made for challenging, yet memorable play. The backdrop of Arizona’s Pinnacle Peak mountains at every turn, topped off with gorgeous weather, were a gracious add-on for the golfers, who competed for National Rankings and IJGT Merit Points.

Sam FoustIn the Boys 15-19 Division, Samuel Foust of Edina, Minn., was crowned victor with his dominating play. After a tournament-low, 2-under-par 69 in the first round put him atop the leaderboard with a four stroke cushion, Foust came out on the second day poised and determined to keep his momentum going. He ended his final round with an even-par 71, which put him at a tournament total of 2-under-par 140. This secured a nine-stroke victory for Foust, who also earned the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, along with Thomas Avant of Chandler, Ariz., for their even-par rounds. Foust sank 11 pars and four birdies on the day to cap off a spectacular outing.

When asked about the strongest part of his game over the weekend, as well as his mindset going into the final round, Foust explained, “Driving the ball was probably the strongest part of my game… I was just trying to expand my lead and stay ahead.”

This was Foust’s first appearance and win with the IJGT.

Rounding out the top three in the Boys 15-19 Division were Jackson Whisenhunt of Phoenix, Ariz., and Avant, who carded tournament totals of 149 and 150, respectively.

Jack WhislerThe Boys 14 & Under Division was spearheaded by Jack Whisler of Scottsdale, Ariz., who finished the two-day event with a tournament total of 166. Whisler carded respectable back-to-back 83’s on the unforgiving Pinnacle Course, and was able to extend a 14-stroke lead after the first round to an ultimate 22-stroke victory. He tallied four pars and a birdie on the par-5 number No. 5, while also playing the course’s three par-5s in even-par for his final round.

When considering any pressure on the final day to hold onto his first-round lead, Whisler stated, “I didn’t really think about that. It was just me against the course, trying to improve my score from yesterday.”

This is Whisler’s second win in as many events for the IJGT. His first win also came in his hometown, at the West Coast Kickoff at TPC Scottsdale on Sept. 1-2.

Reese Phillips of Murrieta, Calif., landed in second place with a total score of 188.

This was the Fall finale for IJGT’s West Coast Tour, which will be in action next on Feb. 1-2, 2014, for the Major Championship at Presidio Golf Course in San Francisco, Calif. To register for this Event, or others, visit or call (843) 785-2444.
