Sawyers takes first in come-from-behind win
Weiner wins second consecutive Summer Series event
The IJGT traveled to Rock Spring Club to host one of the final events in the IJGT Summer Series on August 12-13, 2014. The two-day tournament faced severe weather but went the distance as 23 juniors competed for national rankings.
After a shared lead following round one, the Boys 15-19 Division was won by Sam Sawyers of New York, N.Y. Recording scores of 77-73 – 150 overall, Sawyers used a four stroke improvement to win in a come-from-behind fashion over Ezekiel Zhao of Annapolis, Md., and John Dantonio of Lancaster, N.Y., who shared the divisional lead at the end of round one. Sitting two strokes behind then leaders, Sawyers used two birdies and 13 pars in round two to move into first. Sawyers’ score of 73 in round two earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the junior with the lowest score in the final round in each division.
Zhao finished in second place in the division with scores of 75-76 – 151 while Dantonio and Luke McKeogh of Warminster, Pa., shared third with overall scores of 153.
“My putting was the strongest part of my game. I did not miss a putt outside of 10 feet,” said Sawyers about the key to his success.
Coming off a victory at the Summer Series at The Ridge at Back Brook, Spencer Weiner of Short Hills, N.J., secured his second consecutive tournament win in the Boys 14 & Under Division. Weiner’s second round score of 74 earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the Boys 14 & Under Division.
“I practiced a lot on the range to get prepared for the tournament,” said Weiner. “My consistency from tee to green is the strongest part of my game.”
