Summer Series at Pine Ridge Golf Club – Final results

Pizzurro-Gomez wins in a sudden-death playoff

The IJGT continued its northeast segment of the Summer Series at the Pine Ridge Golf Club on August 5-6, 2014. The two-day, 36-hole event featured a small yet competitive field of juniors from New York. Juniors competed for national rankings as well as the championship title.

Pizzurro-GomezIn a close race for first, the Boys 15-19 Division, saw a playoff between Neil Vyas of Forest Hills, N.Y., and Dominic Pizzurro-Gomez of White Plains, N.Y. Pizzurro-Gomez trailed by one stroke headed into the final round, but was able to close the gap early by making 10 par saves in his second round. Sitting tied at 166, the pair headed to a sudden death playoff.

Off the tee of the playoff hole on the par-4 No. 1, Vyas missed the fairway right while Pizzurro-Gomez missed to the left. Pizzurro-Gomez used two shots to reach the green but Vyas landed just shy. Victory was in reach as Pizzurro-Gomez followed with a two-putt for par and the win in the division. His second round score of 81 earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award for the lowest final round score in the division. Vyas’ scores of 84-82—166 earned him second in the division.

“I was shocked when I saw Neil’s putt drop on No. 18 from that distance. It put a lot more pressure on me to make my seven-footer to extend the match. I putted well all day and I’m glad that putt dropped,” said Pizzurro-Gomez.

staisilThe Boys 14 & Under Division was captured by Cole Staisil of New York, N.Y. After his steady first round play, Staisil looked to improve, doubling his total pars in round two to improve his score by six strokes. Finishing with scores of 92-86—178, Staisil secured the victory and the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the division.

“I wasn’t putting as well as I normally do, but with a course this tight I was able to hit some recovery shots that helped me score well and save some pars. I’m excited for the upcoming tournaments with the IJGT and hope I can keep improving from here,” said Staisil.

The IJGT’s Summer Series will continue its competition at the Rock Spring Club in West Orange, N.J., on August 12-13, 2014. To sign up for this event, or others, visit IJGT.com or call (843) 785-2444.

In round two, Cook added two more birdies and an eagle to secure his win.

“I tried to put my first round [68] out of my mind and keep calm and let it fly,” said Cook.

Charlie Watson of Toronto, Ontario, added two birdies and an eagle of his own in round two to shave five strokes from his round one score en route to his second place finish. Watson carded scores of 77-72 – 149. Rounding out the division was a three-way tie for third between Luke McKeogh of Warminster, Pa., Kyle Vance of Audubon, Pa., and Cody Dazen of Shamong, N.J. The trio carded tournament totals of 154.

WeinerIn the Boys 14 & Under Division, Spencer Weiner of Short Hills, N.J., used a come-from-behind performance to nab first. At the conclusion of round one, Weiner sat two strokes off of then leader Ryan Pongrac of Freehold, N.J., but two second-round birdies and 11 pars allowed him to shave six strokes from his round one score and capture first. The round two score of 76 for Weiner was enough to earn him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the division, the award presented to the junior who tallies the lowest score in the second round of the tournament.

Second place went to Pongrac with scores of 80-83 – 163. Rounding out the Boys 14 & Under Division was Alex Cook of Berwyn, Pa., with a tournament total of 186.

“I kept my composure through consistency and trusting my game,” said Weiner.

bookholdtHaley Bookholdt of Columbus, N.J., won the Girls Division with scores of 77-73 – 150. Her victory is the first since her win in at The Battle at Bulle Rock in April of the 2011-2012 season.

“I played safe, didn’t go for too many pins. It was tempting but had to go around them and two-putt,” said Bookholdt.

In second was Megan McLean of Lebanon, N.J, who finished with scores of 78-77 – 155 while Allyson Wentworth of Stewartsville, N.J., rounded out the division in third. Wentworth posted a two-day score of 158.
