Final results from the West Coast Kickoff at TPC Scottsdale

Rybicki captures crown on final hole

Whisler wins first IJGT title

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) held the first West Coast event of the 2013-2014 season at TPC Scottsdale, Sept. 1-2. The West Coast Kickoff at TPC Scottsdale, a 36-hole event, was contested on the Stadium Course and the Champions Course. Abnormal humidity and wind made scoring conditions tough in the desert throughout the weekend.

Rybicki Tee Shot2The Boys 15-19 Division came down to the wire on Monday at the Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale. Ryan Rybicki of Maricopa, Ariz., was able to hold off Jackson Whisenhunt of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sam McKay of Scottsdale, Ariz., to earn his first IJGT title in the Boys 15-19 Division.

Going into the last hole Whisenhunt held a one-stroke lead over both Rybicki and McKay, but a double-bogey created an opportunity for his fellow competitors to seize the top spot. Rybicki was able to execute his shots and recorded a par on the closing hole, while McKay managed a bogey. Rybicki’s final-round score of 7-over-par 78 gave him a tournament total of 151 and a one-stroke victory.

McKay and Whisenhunt finished in a tie for second place with a tournament score of 152. McKay’s first-round score of 1-over-par 72 on the Stadium Course earned him the KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award, which goes to the player that has the lowest score in the first round of every IJGT Event. Whisenhunt carded a 6-over-par 77 on Monday claiming the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Whisler TrophyPlaying in a nationally-ranked tournament is usually a pretty nervous experience; however Jack Whisler of Scottsdale, Ariz., handled himself well en route to a victory in the Boys 14 & Under Division.

Whisler started the tournament off with a birdie on the opening hole and never looked back. He would make two more birdies on his way to a score of 7-over-par 78 on Sunday. This score earned him the KENTWOOL Socks Lo-Pro Award and also gave him a two-stroke leading going into the final round on Monday on the Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale.

The final round was a battle until the very end as Whisler and Mikee Ordona of Upland, Calif.,  exchanged spurts of great golf on the first 14 holes. The turning point of the tournament came on No. 15 where Whisler converted a birdie on the short par-4 and Ordona made bogey. From there it was smooth sailing for Whisler who finished with a final-round score of 83 which earned him the title and also the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

Ordona took second place in the tournament finishing with a tournament total of 164.

First-round highlights from the West Coast Kickoff at TPC Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The first round of the International Junior Golf Tour’s (IJGT) West Coast Kickoff at TPC Scottsdale featured many stellar performances. Today’s round was contested on the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale, which hosts the PGA Tour’s Waste Management Open. The par-71 course was setup up at nearly 6,800 yards with a tough set of hole locations. This combined with scorching temperatures in the high 90s with over 50% humidity gave the competitors all they could handle.

In the Boys 15-19 Division,  Sam McKay of Scottsdale, Ariz., was able to navigate the Stadium Course in 1-over-par 72. He will look for his first IJGT victory on Monday at the Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale.

IJGT Announces West Coast Kickoff at TPC Scottsdale

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) is excited to announce TPC Scottsdale as one of the first venues for the 2013-2014 season. The West Coast Kickoff at TPC Scottsdale will take place during Labor Day weekend August 31- September 1. Junior golfers ranging in ages from 9-19 from across the world will be competing to take an early lead in the IJGT Merit Point Rankings. The golfers will be playing on both of TPC Scottsdale premier Stadium and Championship courses.

TPC Scottsdale ChampionsTPC Scottsdale, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, has hosted some of the most historical and memorable moments in contemporary golf since opening its doors in 1986. The Stadium Course, designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf, is maintained to PGA TOUR-quality standards year round. This course was designed especially for tournament play and spectators, and has now become the largest golf event in the world. The 16thhole is most famous for its “Coliseum” during the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The Champions Course rivals the Stadium course for its beauty and play and is the newer of the two courses, being built in 2007. Champions Course is suitable for all skill levels allowing the golfer to play each hole different ways. Each hole flows through the course along natural rugged terrain, many ravines, and picturesque foothills. Golf rates for the Champions course are reasonably priced and comparable to many public courses in the area making it one of Arizona’s “must-play” courses.

TPC Scottsdale will join Troon North Golf Club as the second venue on the International Junior Golf in Scottsdale, AZ. Last year at the PURE Grips Shootout at Troon North, Michael Chrsitifulli dominated the Boys 15-19 Division with an impressive 7-stroke victory. He led entire tournament with 5 birdies and 22 pars during the two-day tournament. The rest of the field was very competitive and filled entirely with talent from the west coast. The IJGT hopes for the same talent to show for the West Coast Kickoff at TPC Scottsdale.
